The King Is Royalty At Headquarters

By Jeff Collerson

A brilliant sprint win at Bulli on Saturday has Royal Turbo, the "king'' of Wentworth Park, primed to score his 15th win at headquarters on tonight.

Royal Turbo, whose Bulli win took his overall record to 19 wins and 16 placings from 63 races, has box one in race eight, a 520m Free-For-All.

"He certainly has a great draw,'' Caroline Hughes, whose partner Glen McKinley trains Royal Turbo said.

"The dog pulled up a treat after Bulli and is racing as well now as he ever did.

"Because he has won 14 races at Wenty people assume he is an old dog but Royal Turbo only turned three last month.

"Luckily he has been injury free with the only problem Glen has had with him was when Royal Turbo tended to cramp while racing in the cold winter weather.''

Wednesday's 720m fifth grade has a mouth-watering clash between rookie Wentworth Park stayers Watch The Wasp (box five), Big Butters (eight), Midnight Jayne (one) and Dark Runner (two).

Watch The Wasp's trainer Dean Swain has given his greyhound a thorough preparation to ready the dog for his first tilt at the tough 720m journey.

"I have given him trials over 640m, 660m and 680m at Wenty and Watch The Wasp has gone better each time,'' Swain said.

"He will probably get tired at the end of 720m but I think he is capable of clocking around 42.70.

"My top grade stayer Starzsa Light trialled recently on the same night as Watch The Wasp and while she ran four-tenths of a second faster, that is to be expected because she has won nine long-distance races at Wentworth Park and has clocked 42 seconds flat.''

Swain rates the Andrew Crouch-trained Big Butters as the greyhound to beat.

Big Butters is new to 720m at Wentworth Park but proved her stamina by defeating White Sox Ethics over 722m at Nowra on January 29.

Big Butters is trained by Andrew Crouch, whose son Adam owns Exultant, sure to be hard to toss in the final event, a 520m fourth grade.

A new addition to the Jason Mackay team, Exultant flashed home to finish a close second to his kennelmate Aston Duke at Wentworth Park last Wednesday, when he was having his first race in over four months.

Best value tonight should be Beat The Bank, who has box eight in race six, a 520m fifth grade.

"She is inclined to be a wide runner but my concern is whether she has enough early pace to get around her rivals from her outside draw,'' trainer Kerry Drynan said.

"Beat The Bank's run home times are good and if I trialled her on her own, on a fast track at Wenty, she might be able to get down to around 30 seconds flat.''

Tonight's safest bet looms as Drink Schooners, ideally positioned in box one in the opening event, a 520m fourth and fifth grade.

The Michelle Sultana-trained greyhound is unbeaten in two starts from box one and led most of the way from box two to win at his most recent Wentworth Park outing on January 17.
