Bulli Gold Cup The Target For Tristan Cannon

By Jeff Collerson

Tristan Cannon, rated by many keen judges as the best "one turn'' greyhound in NSW, maintained his unbeaten Maitland record on Thursday with another fastest time of the meeting performance.

The Jason Magri-trained speedster sped over 450m in 24.93, after winning his previous Maitland starts in 24.71 and over 400m in 22.43.

Tristan Cannon failed at his only test on the tighter Wentworth Park circuit but relishes the roomy stretches of Maitland and Bulli, where he has also built up an imposing record.

The greyhound looms as one of the early fancies for the Group 2 Ladbrokes Cyril Rowe Gold Cup over 472m at Bulli next month.

Heats are on February 17 with the $40,000 to the winner final a week later, but meanwhile Tristan Cannon will go around again at Maitland this Thursday.

"He is a very quick dog and was far from disgraced when a desperately unlucky fourth in a heat of the Group 1 Hobart Thousand on December 14,'' Magri said.

"The Bulli Cup is his goal but after that he will have another crack at Wentworth Park because he has no choice, that's where the money is.

"I don't think Tristan Cannon will ever be a top grader at Wenty because it is not his type of track, but I believe he has enough speed to win at least a couple of races there.''

Double Stitched will be on trial for a start in the Group 1 Ladbrokes National Derby heats on January 27 when he makes his Wentworth Park debut on Wednesday.

The James Porter-trained greyhound took his provincial record to 10 wins from 15 starts when he won a heat of the Gosford to Wenty Series last Tuesday night.

"Double Stitched does not turn two until next month and is still very green,'' Porter said.

"But if he handles Wenty as well as I think he will, he should be hard to beat on Wednesday, especially if he gets around the first bend without being touched.

"Having said that, Double Stitched has never seen Wenty Park, even in a trial, and can improve up to five lengths with a look at a track.

"So whatever he does on Wednesday he should improve on, which is why I think he could be up to tackling the Derby.''

Teresa’s Hawke, who made the pace when runner-up twice over 520m at Wentworth Park in May and June, returns to headquarters in Wednesday night's Dapto to Wenty Final.

The Ben Jarczewski-trained greyhound has returned from a spell better than ever judging by her form at Dapto over the past few weeks.

She has scored two wins and a second in four stars over 520m there and began brilliantly before holding off the well-performed Phoenix Pak to win her Dapto to Wenty heat last Thursday.

Teresa's Hawke was tiring slightly at the finish but still managed to stop the clock at a slick 30.10.

In one of her second placings at Wentworth Park in mid-2017, Teresa's Hawke raced away with a big lead before being caught by Mr Shire near the finish of her 520m race.

That's understandable as Mr Shire is second only to Lochinvar Hugo among NSW's top middle distance performers and is the holder of the 600m record at LADBROKES GARDENS.
