Canya Wait For Tonight?

By Jeff Collerson

Trainer Glen McKinley reckons he has been given an early Christmas present with the box positions allotted to his greyhounds Wait There and Canya Ayden at tonight's Wentworth Park meeting.

Wait There in the opening event, has box seven in the fifth grade Ladbrokes Money Wire Stakes (Race 1, 520m), while Canya Ayden has drawn the rails in the fourth grade Ladbrokes Info Hub Stakes (Race 8, 520m).

"They are both boxed where they want to be,'' McKinley said.

"When Wait There finished third to Goldstein and Glengarrie Boy at Wentworth Park on Saturday night he had box three but lost a lot of ground when he ran off the track at the first turn.

"It was a good effort to come from sixth on the back straight to manage a placing and he is far better positioned out wide.''

Wait There also drops in class tonight, dipping from fourth to fifth grade company.

Canya Ayden jumped brilliantly from box four to lead all the way in a fourth and fifth grade event last Saturday, posting 30.06, fastest time of the night.

"Canya Ayden pulled up perfectly following his race on Saturday and he is shaping up to be something pretty special,'' McKinley said.

"He can run fast time on any track he goes to, he even performs well on courses he has not previously seen.

"I plan to enter Canya Ayden and Wait There for the Group 2 Woy Woy Poultry Gold Cup heats at Gosford on Boxing night.

"They will be racing against the best sprinters in NSW but I believe that if they are drawn well there they are up to the challenge.''

McKinley will also enter Royal Turbo for the Gosford race providing the dog goes well in Wednesday night's 520m Free-For-All.

Royal Turbo, whose 10 Wentworth Park wins include the 2016 Group 3 Christmas Gift, finished seventh to Riley Tokaam in this year's Gift final, held last Saturday at Wentworth Park.

"Royal Turbo led when he finished second in his Gift heat on December 9 but when he drew box five in last Saturday's final I knew he had the job ahead of him,'' McKinley said.

"He has a nice draw tonight so he gets a chance to earn a run at Gosford.''

Hardest for Royal Turbo to beat should be the John Little-trained Black Hole Sun, who was runner-up in Riley Tokaam's Christmas Gift last Saturday.

"Black Hole Sun is in a winnable race on Wednesday,'' Little said.

"He went off the boil for a while but is back racing as well as ever again.

"I was very happy with his run behind Riley Tokaam because my dog and Barking Bad had a bit of a bumping duel going through the catching pen.

"Despite that Black Hole Sun finished strongly to beat all but the winner and a subsequent veterinary check has declared him spot on for tonight.''

Bolt Like Bekim chased home Egyptian Pirate when they clashed over 618m at Richmond on December 8 but the additional distance of tonight's 720m race five fifth grade should enable that dog to turn the tables.

Egyptian Pirate's fastest time in seven Wentworth Park long-distance races has been 42.70 but Bolt Like Bekim posted a brilliant 42.43 there on October 28.
