Massive Future For Promising Juveniles

Corykodi and Sky Wave have massive futures after they took out major juvenile finals at Casino and Maitland late last week.

Corykodi, trained at Gilberton in Queensland, by 83-year-old Claude Dacey, led all the way to win the time-honoured Pop Northfield Memorial Maiden Classic on Friday at Casino.

Corykodi, a son of the great Paw Licking, won his semi-final of the Pop Northfield in 23.37 and reduced those figures to 23.34 when he won the final.

Dacey refused a $35,000 offer to sell Corykodi after the greyhound's Pop Northfield semi-final win.

A Brisbane Broncos rugby league fan, Dacey named his current speedster after two of his favourite team's first grade stars, second rower Corey Oates and half-back Kodi Nikorema.

Only 24 hours prior to the Pop Northfield final, the Vic Sultana-trained Sky Wave had taken out the Maitland Future Stars Final in a slick 22.35.

Sky Wave, who is owned by businessman Chenhao “Vince” Sun, had won her heat in a blistering 22.19.

“While she has not been tried beyond 400m I think Sky Wave will win over 520m,” Vic Sultana said.

“My son Darren is training her litter sister Ella Enchanted, and she has won three from four races, with a strong Bulli 472m success among those wins.”

Vic Sultana, 65, has had few greyhounds in recent years, but in the sport's golden era he trained the outstanding stayer Clover Sylvia.

Lochinvar Hugo registered a remarkable 10th successive win when he gave the great Space Star's track record a nudge at Gosford on Friday night.

Lochinvar Hugo, trained at Newcastle by Robert Smith, enjoyed 16 lengths winning romp, stopping the clock at 34.36, just outside the 600m record of 34.21 set by Space Star in 2014.

Smith's greyhound, owned and bred by Kevin Gordon and his family, has now won 18 of 27 races.

Training astonishingly consistent greyhounds is nothing new to Smith, who once steered the champion sprinter Miss Elly Mint to a record 16 wins in succession.

Miss Elly Mint completed that consecutive tally of victories when she won at Wentworth Park in February, 2009, retiring soon after with a career record of 44 wins from 66 starts.

Dusty Gambler will tackle the Group 1 Bold Trease over 715m at Sandown following his dazzling long-distance debut last Saturday night.

Dusty Gambler, trained in Victoria by Seona Thompson, came from the back of the field to win running away over 725m at The Meadows on Saturday night in 42.78.

That was remarkable time for a rookie stayer given that Bogie Bekim took 42.62 in running down champion Fanta Bale in the long distance Top Gun.

Thompson has the mighty Burn One DEAN in her kennels but after Saturday's win, believed Dusty Gambler was up to winning the Bold Trease.

Heats of the Bold Trease will be run on November 17, with the final a week later.

Also impressing at The Meadows last Saturday was the Kayla-Jane COLEMAN trained Where Art Thou, who flew home to win a heat of the 600m Hume Cup in a nippy 34.68.
