Little Big Town Returns To The Big Smoke

By Jeff Collerson

Little Big Town should only need to secure a clear run and bring her trial form to Wentworth Park tonight to open her account in the city.

The Tony Messina-trained greyhound has box four in the 5th grade Uni Night 29/11 Spring Carnival Stakes (race eight, 520m), and was an impressive all-the-way winner at her most recent start.

Little Big Town began brilliantly from box one to win over 535m at Richmond on October 13, her sixth success from 15 provincial starts.

At her only Wentworth Park race Little Big Town had box six and after veering towards the rails at the start, lost all chance by running wide and colliding at the first turn.

"That's her problem, she wants to head in when she jumps and then tends to move off the track at the first turn,'' Messina said.

"Little Big Town can handle Wentworth Park though and before she raced there on October 13 she trialled 30.10 over the 520m there.

"That time should be good enough to win Wednesday's fifth grade event.''

Hombre Montana has won only three of his 36 starts but the dog has been placed 19 times and gets his chance to win in town after drawing box eight in 5th grade Go Electrical Appreciation Stakes (race one, 520m).

Hombre Montana has taken a liking to Wentworth Park as he has been placed in two of his three races at headquarters.

Richard Stock, an anaesthetics paramedical officer who also teaches aerobics classes, trains greyhounds as a hobby and expects Hombre Montana to run his customary honest race.

"Box eight should be okay for my dog because he does not crash towards the rails at the start, he will run in a straight line from the boxes to the first turn,'' Stock said.

"Hombre Montana is most consistent and nearly always earns some prizemoney but will need to be on his game if he is to beat Lagoon Wilks, who looks the dog to beat from box one.''

Squeak Scolari, far from disgraced when fourth in a semi-final of the Group 1 Ladbrokes Vic Peters Classic at Wentworth Park on Saturday night, gets her chance in tonight's far easier 5th grade Ladbrokes Odds Boost Stakes (race six, 520m).

"She was a $101 chance last Saturday but will probably be favourite this time,'' trainer Warren Harper said.

"Squeak Scolari's run was good in the Vic Peters semi because she collided with Chasin' Crackers when they were disputing second position at the first turn.

"Chasin' Crackers is a fairly big dog who wanted to get to the rails and when Squeak Scolari moved off a bit on the corner they bumped pretty solidly.

"Squeak Scolari did well to hang on and finish fourth and while she is going well she has box six on Wednesday and would be a lot better off from an inside draw.''

Best bet on the program should be the Jason Magri-trained Bad Boy Joe, who has box six in the 5th grade Ladbrokes Info Hub Stakes (race seven, 520m).

Bad Boy Joe's form tapered off in September but the dog showed the benefit of a short break to win impressively over 450m at Maitland last Thursday.

After being sixth to leave the starting boxes, Bad Boy Joe swept around his rivals to hit the front at the top of the straight.

He then drew away to win easily in the handy time of 25.20.

Bad Boy Joe had no trouble handling box seven at Maitland and should be suited by Wednesday's box six draw.

The dog was successful at his only race from box six.

His trainer Jason Magri could land a winning double with Miss Darlo ideally positioned in box one in the 5th grade Christmas Meeting December 16 Stakes (race three, 520m).

Miss Darlo, a former SA sprinter, was making her Sydney debut when a fast finishing second, beaten a nose, in a handy 30.32 at Wentworth Park last Wednesday night.
