My Gal Penny To Land The Coin

By Jeff Collerson

A move from box six to box three and the experience of a race on the track should enable My Gal Penny to break through for her first Wentworth Park win tonight.

My Gal Penny will wear the white rug in the 5th grade Go Electrical Started 2006 Stakes, (race 10, 520m).

After winning two of three provincial races the Patricia Chaker-trained My Gal Penny made her Wentworth Park debut last Wednesday, exiting box six and finishing second to Modus Operandi in the fast time of 29.99.

Chaker's 19-year-old son Jackson, who assists his mother in caring for My Gal Penny, said: "Box three is a lot better for our greyhound than being out in box six.

"She is usually a good beginner but came out a bit tardy from last week's wide draw.

"Last Wednesday My Gal Penny was having her first race at Wenty yet she still clocked a nippy 30.20 in finishing second.

"The run should improve her because all she had previously at Wentworth Park was a box-to-box hand-slip when she recorded smart early splits of 5.45 and 13.90.''

My Gal Penny looks the best value bet while Miss Splendamiro, who is likely to be an odds-on favourite in the 4/5th Points 2 Go Bathurst To Wentworth Park Final (race two, 520m), looms as the night's safest wager.

Miss Splendamiro led throughout to win her heat over 520m at Bathurst in a brilliant 29.82, scoring by a dozen lengths.

The other heat winner Reservoir Risk took 30.11 to score and while he has drawn box six in the final, Miss Splendamiro has drawn ideally in box one.

There is not a more suitably boxed runner at Wentworth Park on Wednesday than Miss Splendamiro, as Watta Barghest, who has box two, is a slow beginner and Tina's Magic, in three, is a wide runner.

Miss Splendamiro's trainer Hank Vanderburg said: "I was disappointed with my greyhound's third and unplaced efforts in two Wentworth Park races in August and early September so I gave her a freshen up.

"She returned to win over 400m at Richmond in fast time on September 27 before running near record time of 29.61 in a 520m trial at Bathurst on October 9.

"Then she came out and led throughout to win her heat there in quick time and she has done a treat since.''

Brilliant front-runner Ben Hur will need to do every thing right if he is to win at his Wentworth Park debut tonight.

The George Borg-trained speedster, who has won six of nine provincial starts, has box four in the 5th grade Go 27 Locations 520m Dapto to Wentworth Park Final (race five, 520m).

Ben Hur overcame an early bump to win his Dapto heat in 30.17 with Wayang Angel (30.23) and Dyna Kelly (30.38) the other winners.

On Wednesday Ben Hur has box four and could have trouble clearing the speedy Wayang Angel, who has box three and tends to run a little wide.

Bargo trainer Simon Rhodes gives his qualifiers, Dyna Kelly (box eight) and Dyna Orenthal (box five) good chances.

Dyna Orenthal chased home Wayang Angel is his heat but Rhodes said today: "He is slow early but has a big motor and is very strong at the finish.

"I would be more confident if he had box eight because Dyan Orenthal is a wide runner, so he will need a clear run.

"Dyna Kelly has more early speed than her litter brother and kennelmate and should handle box eight okay.

"Neither of my greyhounds has seen Wentworth Park but both have handled other tracks comfortably when making their first appearances.''

Dyna Kelly led all the way to win her heat from box one but ran in the middle of the track so looks suitably positioned in the outside trap.
