Staines Sets Ambitious Plan For Bogan Doonie

By Jeff Collerson

Yass trainer Neil Staines has an ambitious campaign mapped out for Bogan Doonie, who broke through for her first Wentworth Park win last Saturday night.

A talented greyhound but a notoriously slow beginner, Bogan Doonie took advantage of a first turn scrimmage when pacemaker Zulu General ran off the track, skittling co-leader Pick It Up in the process.

Bogan Doonie railed to the lead approaching the back straight and drew away to win comfortably in a handy 30.35.

She had been placed in each of two previous Wentworth Park races after winning five from nine provincial starts.

"Bogan Doonie will contest Saturday night's heats of the Ladbrokes Monthly Medal, a bitches only series, at Wentworth Park,'' Staines said.

"The final of that race is on October 14 and then she will tackle the heats of the age restricted Group 1 Ladbrokes Vic Peters Classic at Wentworth Park.''

Zipping Willow was known as "the queen of Wentworth Park'' after winning 20 of 28 races at headquarters and now her son Zipping Clive could be set for a stellar career.

This unraced offspring of Turanza Bale and Zipping Willow, who is just 21 months old, made his first public appearance at LADBROKES GARDENS on Friday and won a 515m performance trial in a quick 29.78.

The only greyhound to record faster time at the meeting was the brilliant front runner Liberty Lee who clocked 29.63 as she notched her 15th win.

Zipping Clive, who raced wide but led throughout, is, like his famous mother, trained by Jason Mackay.

Tahlia's Way, runner-up to Billy's Bake in the Group 3 Chairman's Cup at Wentworth Park on September 9, will miss Saturday night's heats of the Sydney Cup, another Group 3 720m event at headquarters.

The John Dart-trained greyhound, who has had two wins and two seconds from four Wentworth Park 720m outings, has torn a groin muscle and will be sidelined for a month.

Kong, who has been the fastest Wentworth Park winner at each of the past three Saturday night meetings, has been a revelation to owner Luke Murray.

While Kong now races at a hefty 39kg, Murray said he was alarmed when he picked up the then unraced youngster from a rearing farm.

"When I collected Kong to organise his pre-race education, he tipped the scales at a whopping 43 kilos,'' Murray said.

"I was worried that a dog so big might never be a success on the track, especially on two turns courses like Wentworth Park.

"But after a couple of early hiccups Kong has adapted beautifully to Wenty and now jumps away well and really zips around the corners.''

Mister Twister's scratching from Saturday night's Wentworth Park Free-For-All made Kong's task easier and the group race star will be taking a short break.

Kong's owner Luke Murray, who also heads the syndicate which also owns the Jason Mackay-trained Mister Twister, said: "After he finished fourth in a heat of the Dapto Megastar Jason trialled him at Ladbroke Gardens.

"Mister Twister did not go as well as he should have so Jason is giving him two or three weeks off.''
