Kong Sets Time Standard Again

By Jeff Collerson

Kong set the Wentworth Park time standard for the second successive week when he was the only greyhound to break the 30 second barrier on Saturday night.

The Cheryl Murray-trained Kong led virtually all the way to take out race eight – a free-for-all – stopping the clock at 29.90.

The time was outstanding given the track was not conducive to fast times, and followed Kong's powerful best of the night 29.90 performance a week earlier.

In other action at Wentworth Park on Saturday night, litter sisters Ebby Ripper and Ebby Chance gave their excited trainer Michael Eberand his first winning double when they both won.

Ebby Ripper came from third on the back straight and fourth turning for home to win running away over 720m. Her sister Ebby Chance later upset odds-on favourite Kingsbrae Cheeko to land a 520m fourth grade by two lengths in a nippy 30.23.

Ebby Ripper and Ebby Chance are offspring of Eberand's brood bitch Ebby Miss, which he bought as a pup for only $1400.

“I had not won a double anywhere, even at a TAB C meeting, until tonight,” Eberand said.

“Until Ebby Miss came along, finishing second in a Sydney Cup and producing a string of terrific progeny, I was more likely to win races at Potts Park than Wenty Park.

“Ebby Chance surprised me by beating Kingsbrae Cheeko to the first turn and once she led I knew they could not run her down. She won in smart time over 618m at Richmond on September 13 and is engaged in a 600m race at Gosford on Tuesday, which she should win.

“I had been intending to step Ebby Chance up to 720m racing but she has gone so well over the 520m tonight I might need to re-think my plans.”

Bella Can Do lifted her earnings to $45,000 when she took out race four.

The Mary Spiteri bred, owned and trained Bella Can Do came from a distant sixth at the halfway mark, storming down the outside to win by a head.

“Bella Can Do has won over a middle distance but although she is very strong I don't intend trying her as a stayer,” Spiteri said.

Owner-trainer Lorraine Atchison was left scratching her head after her greyhound Blossom Belle bungled the start and came from fifth on the back straight to win the second race on Saturday night.

Blossom Belle now boasts an excellent strike rate of 12 wins from 28 races, but Atchison cannot understand why the greyhound keeps misjudging the jump at Wentworth Park.

“Blossom Belle nails the start everywhere else but at Wenty she bombs the jump so is usually forced to give her rivals a big start.”

See you next week!
