Promising Youngsters Continue Their Winning Form

By Jeff Collerson

Maggie Marvel and Zagati, among the most promising youngsters unearthed in the recent Crownbet Maiden Classic series at Dapto, have now won two races apiece so are eligible to race at Wentworth Park.

On Frday at LADBROKES GARDENS, the Michelle Shambler-trained Maggie Marvel scored her second win while on the same night Zagati, trained by Ray Smith, registered her second success.
Maggie Marvel covered the 515m in 29.99, excellent time considering she was hampered crossing to the rails from box five.

Zagati overcame box eight to win at Richmond in 30.90 after scoring by 13 lengths in 30.89 from a more favourable box two draw at her previous outing on the Londonderry track.

Hurricane Kai may tackle next month's Group 1 Ladbrokes Vic Peters Classic after scoring his fourth win in 10 starts for trainer Mark Gatt at Richmond on Friday.

Hurricane Kai went straight to the lead from box four but looked "gone'' when National Derby winner Big Daddy Bee, a greyhound noted for his strength at the end of 535m, sat behind Gatt's pup.

But Hurricane Kai held on tenaciously for a nose win in a smart 30.71.

Just two years old, Hurricane Kai is the ideal age for the Classic heats, restricted to greyhounds whelped on or after July 1, 2015, and held at Wentworth Park on October 21.

Max Cady made light of missing races in successive weeks at Gosford by scoring his fourth Wentworth Park win on Saturday night.

"He was due to race at Gosford a fortnight ago but the meeting had to be abandoned and the following week Max Cady was first reserve there but did not gain a start,'' trainer Peter Tobin said.

"I was worried about him being short of a run going into Saturday's race because all he had as a lead-up was a hit-out on a local straight track.

"It might have worked to his advantage because Max Cady was so fresh he showed good early speed to be in second place at the first turn and after he hit the front soon after he still got to the line strongly.''
