Riley Tokaam A Megastar For Mackay

By Jeff Collerson

Riley Tokaam's performance in giving the classy El Magnifico a start and a beating at Wentworth Park last Saturday night has earned the dog a tilt at the Group 1 Dapto Megastar.

Heats of Dapto's biggest race will be held on September 21 with the 520m final, worth $75,000 to the winner, a week later.

"I am taking Riley Tokaam to Dapto on Friday for a trial to give him a look at the track,'' trainer Jason Mackay said.

"The dog had a 600m race there early in his career but Dapto is a course where greyhounds need at least a couple of runs before they can fulfil their true potential.

"Mister Twister, who finished third in Watch The Wasp's Bob Payne Spring Sprint last Saturday, will also tackle the Megastar.

"He has won over the Megastar course in a fast 29.76 but he will also accompany Riley Tokaam to trial on Friday.

"I want to give Mister Twister another look at the track.

"Although El Magnifico is a top dog I wasn't surprised Riley Tokaam ran him down last Saturday.

"After Riley Tokaam finished sixth to Mister Twister in a heat of the Bob Payne I did something I don't normally do, I gave him another gallop before Saturday's meeting.

"I just wanted to be sure all was okay with him and in a post-to-post slip Riley Tokaam recorded time that is rarely, if ever, equalled at Ladbrokes Gardens.''

Meanwhile a solo trial at Dapto on Friday will decide whether Mr Twister's Bob Payne conqueror Watch The Wasp contests the Megastar heats.

Watch The Wasp's trainer Dean Swain said: "There is a chance the Dapto track won't suit the way Watch The Wasp runs his races.

"So if the dog does not run smart time on Friday I will by-pass the Megastar, but either way I will be heading to Melbourne shortly to give the dog experience of running at Sandown.

"My goal is to see him invited to contest the Topgun in Melbourne later this year but I would not expect him to tackle a race like that without having experience on the tracks down there.''
