Billy's Bake Takes Out Chairman's Cup

By Jeff Collerson

Blly's Bake - hobby trained in Victoria by ladies hairdresser Ian Garland - took out the Group 3 Chairman's Cup (720m) at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

Tahlia’s Way looked all over a winner when she took a considerable lead at the top of the home straight, but Billy's Bake, who had been in fourth spot most of the way, roared down the outside to beat Tahlia's Way by just over two lengths, with Caco Potion, another Victorian, a neck away third. The winning time was 42.64.

Hot favourite Mr. Shire, who was fifth at the first turn, was never a threat and finished fourth.

Billy’s Bake was lucky to have been in the final having just scraped into the race after finishing fourth in his heat, at what was his first start at Wentworth Park.

But the greyhound seemed to benefit from that run and looked at home in recording the biggest win of his career.

Billy’s Bake has now won 12 races from 34 starts.

The lead up to the Chairman's Cup was not without drama with pre-race favourite Fanta Bale scratched on Friday due to illness, while Outside Pass was also a non-runner through injury.
