Just What The Doctor Ordered

By Jeff Collerson

When Dr George Clegg, a Gold Coast general practitioner, bred a litter of pups but was unable to place them with a trainer, he decided to take on the task himself.

Dr Clegg, whose practice is at Mudgeeraba, has now won 26 races with the five youngsters he bred from his former handy stayer Bralyn Casey, who had been mated with Lochinvar Marlow.

A daughter of Bralyn Maisie, who won the 2007 group 1 National Futurity for Sydney trainer Don McMillan, Bralyn Casey scored 12 wins and 22 placings in 78 starts for Dr Clegg.

But she looks set to be even better as a brood bitch, with her son Big Bad Bob winning over 520m at Lismore in a sizzling 29.81, fastest Time of the night on a slow track.

It was Big Bad Bob's 10th win, while his siblings, all trained and owned by Dr Clegg, comprise Ranger Danger (six wins), Casey Mini Me (five wins), Rum Runner (three wins) and Casey Whisper, who has won only two races but is tipped by her trainer to become the star of the litter.

"I got involved with greyhounds over 40 years ago when my mother, Mary owned a greyhound called Kilbride,'' Dr Clegg recalled.

"Kilbride was trained by Bruce Edwards, a leading trainer of the Time, and I still have a photograph of a presentation with mum after Kilbride won the 1975 Daily Mirror Trophy at Wentworth Park.''

Trainer Jodie Van Enkhuyzen was so disappointed with Charrua's tiring fifth at Wentworth Park on August 26 she rushed him to her veterinary surgeon the following day.

Result of that consultation is that Charrua is to have a tonsillectomy, in an attempt to enable the smart sprinter, already a winner of two races at Wentworth Park, regain his top form.

The Jason Mackay trained Mister Twister was not finishing off his races early this year but bounced back to win Group races after having his tonsils removed.

Knight Sprite has broken down and will be sidelined for two months.

Knight Sprite made the pace but weakened out of contention from the half-way mark when fifth to Elzy Lay at Wentworth Park on August 26.

One of NSW's best sprinters throughout 2016 and this year, Knight Sprite has won 34 of his 94 starts for over $237,000 prizemoney.

"When he dropped out so quickly at his last run I knew something was amiss and he suffered a leg injury,'' trainer Gayle Masterson said.

"It does not really matter if he races again or is retired but veterinary opinion is that he will be able to make a return to the track.''

Offspring of the remarkable brood bitch Time And Money must surely have created a record when members of each of her three litters won four races within six days at three different tracks recently.

Time Lee Money, from the third litter sired by Brett Lee, recorded fastest Time winning his semi-final of the Crownbet Maiden Classic at Dapto on August 24 while Chase The Cash, from Time And Money's second litter, sired by El Grand Senor, won at Richmond 24 hours later.

Then last Tuesday at Goulburn, Time No Money, a member of Time And Money's first litter to Knocka Norris, was successful in a masters' event with Chase The Cash's brother Big Gora victorious in a Goulburn to Wenty heat on the same card.
