Calimero Set To Break Through For First City Win

By Jeff Collerson

Calimero, who set a hot pace before being run down in the last few strides at Wentworth Park on Saturday, can go one better and break through for his first city win there tonight.

The Mark Wilcox-trained greyhound has box one in the Ladbrokes Multimaker Stakes, a 520m fifth grade, and is drawn to be the early leader again.

"Hopefully last Saturday's race will have made him a bit stronger because that was the first time Calimero had been over 520m this year,'' Wilcox said.

"He is a quick dog and can break the 25 second barrier over 450m at Maitland.

"But at Wentworth Park the last 20 metres of a race tends to find him out.

"King Carmody, who has box seven in my race, is probably a better 520m dog than Calimero, but if he finds any sort of trouble from his wide draw we should be hard to beat.''

Wagga trainer Peter Sims could land a winning double at Wentworth Park tonight with Beside The Truth, who has box four in the 520m ladbrokes.com.au Stakes and Zudactyl Monelli, drawn on the rails in the 520m gapnsw.com.au Stakes.

"Beside The Truth has finished second at his past two starts, over 440m at Canberra, and both runs were good,'' Sims said.

"The dog is going every bit as well as he was when he performed well at Wentworth Park during his previous campaign and if he begins cleanly from box four his rivals will know he is there.

"I also have Senator Monelli, a forrmer WA dog in this race, but he is a 700 metre greyhound who has won $100,000 in prizemoney and has clocked a fast 42.17sec over 715m at Sandown.
"He should run well but would be better suited in a longer race.

"Zudactyl Monelli is also a former WA-trained greyhound and I expect him to go close to winning.

"At his first start for me he won over 525m at Wagga in 30.38, and although he had not previously seen the track, that time was not far outside the course record.

"After the Wagga race Zudactyl Monelli chased home Jodie Lord's smart sprinter Champion Model over 530m at Canberra.

"Zudactyl Monelli had not raced or trialled before but during the race he pulled out a toenail.

"While that caused him to be out of action for the 10 subsequent days he is raring to go again now.''

Glengarrie Mate has not started since winning at Wentworth Park on July 29 but trainer Mick Blissett has the greyhound ready to win first-up.

Glengarrie Mate, who has had five starts at Wentworth Park for two wins and two thirds, has box three in the wentworthpark.com.au Stakes, a 520m fourth grade.

"After his last win Glengarrie Mate was a bit off colour so I gave him a break from racing,'' Blissett said.

"It was nothing serious, he just needed a short spell, but he has had plenty of work up the straight over the past couple of weeks so is fit enough.

"Glengarrie Mate will go into the race nice and fresh and I'm hoping that will help him jump smartly and show his customary early pace.

"He can be hit or miss out of the boxes but if he begins cleanly he should be up near the lead all the way.''
