Combination Unveil Promising Prospect

By Jeff Collerson

The combination of owner-breeder Marty Hallinan and trainer Jason MACKAY has unveiled a promising prospect in ZIPPING-potter">ZIPPING">ZIPPING Potter, who flashed home to win over 450m at Maitland on Thursday in the fastest time of the day.

ZIPPING-potter">ZIPPING">ZIPPING Potter, a youngster by Mogambo from Hallinan's former handy stayer Crafty Lady, came from midfield to win clearly in 25.04, outstanding time for a maiden.

MACKAY has enjoyed tremendous success in recent years with Hallinan-owned and bred greyhounds like ZIPPING Lad, winner of the 2011 Summer Cup, ZIPPING Man, who took out the 2013 Magic Maiden, the 2016 Ladies Bracelet winner ZIPPING Lilly and the queen of Wentworth Park, ZIPPING Willow, the 2014 Bracelet victor.

Naturally MACKAY isn't putting ZIPPING-potter">ZIPPING Potter into that illustrious category just yet, but he believes the juvenile has great potential.

"If he has a flaw it is that he lacks a bit of early dash,'' MACKAY said.

"Realistically the 450m at Maitland was a bit short for ZIPPING-potter">ZIPPING Potter but he managed to get away with that race on Thursday and now he has won his maiden I can step him up.

"I won't be rushing him to Wentworth Park though and plan to give him a couple of 535m races at Richmond as the next steps in his career.''

Last Friday at Ladbrokes Gardens ZIPPING Chazza, a litter brother and kennelmate to ZIPPING-potter">ZIPPING Potter, made an impressive initial public appearance, clocking a fast 29.90 in a solo performance trial over 515m.

Crack stayer Gunnadoo Cove, winner of this year's Group three 720m Wentworth Park Gold Cup, will resume racing in the spring.

Gunnadoo Cove's career has been interrupted by the circumstances of her trainer John Heard, who has had a leg amputated and is recuperating in hospital.

Gunnadoo Cove's owner Benny Howe said: "When John had his misfortune he phoned me and asked me to come to his kennels at North Entrance to pick up my greyhound and start training her.

"While she has won 10 of 27 starts Gunnadoo Cove is only three years old so has plenty of racing left in her.

"She is tearing around my property at Cook's Gap, near MUDGEE, and will resume racing in the Spring and John Heard insists he will be back in action as a trainer as soon as possible.''

Margaret Greer has 14 retired racers who are pets on her Londonderry property but on Friday night at Richmond she landed a good win with Irinka Lyn, the only greyhound she has in training.

Irinka Lyn began brilliantly from box eight to win a 400m event in a nippy 22.90 and Greer now plans to nominate her for Wentworth Park on Wednesday.

"At her only Wenty run Irinka Lyn finished fourth on July 19 but it was a good effort considering she had not previously seen the track,'' Greer said.

"I bought her as a maiden from Ray Smith at FORBES, who won this year's National Derby with Big Daddy Bee.

"Ray had Irinka Lyn and her sister Irinka Darcey for sale and suggested I take both for a month before deciding which one to buy. That was extremely generous but I decided not to take up that offer and brought Irinka Lyn home.

"Irinka Darcey finished up going to NEW ZEALAND where she has won several races but I am happy with my choice.''

Greer's 14 greyhound pets include three siblings, whelped in 2004, who are from a litter which won over 100 races.
