Fire And Smoke Ready To Set Wentworth Park Alight

By Jeff Collerson

Fire And Smoke "should only need to stay on his feet'' to win Saturday night's 720m Ladbrokes Cash Out Stakes (race seven) at Wentworth Park.

That's the opinion of trainer Chris Carl, who believes the greyhound has a big future as a stayer.

"I think he can eventually get down to 42.20sec or 42.30sec at Wentworth Park so he should only have to stay on his feet to win this race,'' Carl said.

"Fire And Smoke will want to shift wide from box three as he does not like being crowded but this looks a perfect race for him.

"He handled the first turn badly when he finished third at his only long-distance start at Wentworth Park on June 28 but he had not previously been out of the 720m boxes so should benefit by that experience.

"Since that race Fire And Smoke finished strongly to win comfortably over 717m at Richmond on July 7.''

Former harness racing trainer-driver Andrew Crouch won with hot favourite Big Butters at Wentworth Park last Saturday night and is set to follow up by winning with that greyhound's litter brother Exultant this week.

Exultant has box two in the 520m ladbrokes.com.au Stakes (race one) and Crouch, now a successful greyhound trainer, is delighted with that draw.

"When he draws wide Exultant sometimes crashes towards the rails so the closer to the fence he draws the better I like it,'' Crouch said.

"Exultant is the fastest dog in my kennels because while he does not have the early speed of Big Butters, he is stronger at the finish.''

Big Butters has box four in Saturday's Ladbrokes Money Wire Final (race five, 520m) but while she was second fastest heat winner Crouch concedes she faces a tough task this week.

"She pulled up well after her heat win last Saturday night but she has box four in the final and with a lot of early pace inside her she will have to nail the start,'' Crouch said.

Big Butters won her heat in 30.38 while Tamaar Tux, the fastest qualifier on 30.21, can improve because he was checked at the first turn in last week's win.

Chase The Cash, back from a month's "freshen up'' has trialled well enough to take out Saturday night's Free-For-All, 520m (race eight).

"She had been up for a few months so after her race at Wentworth Park in mid-June I decided to give her some time off and freshen her up,'' trainer Craig Watts said.

"I brought her back to Wentworth Park last Saturday night and she clocked 30.32 in a 520m trial.

"As only two greyhounds recorded faster time during that night's race meeting I was satisfied with her performance.

"If Chase The Cash can hold her position at the first turn, like I think she can, she will be running home strongly at the finish.''

Glengarrie Boy was scratched from his most recent Wentworth Park engagement but is set to bounce back a winner in Saturday night's wentworthpark.com.au Stakes (race two, 520m)

"He just didn't look right, he seemed a bit off colour when I pulled him out of a Wentworth Park race on June 28 but he came back to win in the fastest time of the night at Bulli last Saturday,'' trainer Mark Gatt said.
