Davis Has The Key To Victory At Richmond

By Stuart Turner

Volkey is in line to score the biggest win of her brief career in tonight’s Globe Memorial Richmond Riches short course final (400m) at Richmond.

The Lindsay Davis-trained greyhound was a $37 chance last week when she broke through for her maiden victory taking out her heat and qualifying for tonight’s $7000-to-the-winner final.

Volkey moves to box five for this race and Davis believes the greyhound is a nice each-way chance.

“I was a bit surprised with that win last week but she’s a really hard chaser,” Davis said.

“She made the semi-finals of the Richmond Riches over the 535m (in May) and was a bit unlucky there. She got injured so we kept her out for a bit and she’s come back well.

“She’s coming along well and I’m really pleased with her. This is a really hard race but I think she’s got improvement in her (and) she can go well.”

Volkey is the latest promising newcomer for Hunter Valley-based Davis, who combines training with her work as a personal trainer.

She has scored notable results in recent months with the likes of Frekey, a multiple Wentworth Park winner over the 720m.

“I’m training people not athletes at a high level but the greyhounds are like athletes,” Davis said.  “To train them they need good diet and exercise.

“I’m finding the two seem to combine well in a number of areas.

“I haven’t been in greyhounds very long but I’m really enjoying learning as I go. I’m loving seeing greyhounds race and it’s going well.”

Also at Richmond tonight, Bold Opal had no joy in the Richmond Riches heats last week but looks the standout chance in the series consolation (race four, 400m).

The Darren Scells-trained greyhound has clocked a smart 23.09 over this trip and won at Wentworth Park on May 27.

Dusty Gambler returned from a long break last week with a solid run and can return to winning ways in the 5th grade Steeline Riverstone Stakes (race five, 535m).

The lightly raced  Jason Magri-trained greyhound ran a brilliant 29.57 over the 520m at Nowra last year and should be fitter for last week’s fifth placed effort.

Red Sox Ethics has run some impressive races in strong company at Wentworth Park and looks the top pick in a quality 4th grade Sires On Ice Stakes (race seven, 535m).

The David Smith-trained greyhound has won two of her last three starts, including a strong 30.01 triumph at Wentworth Park on June 21 and can defeat this field.
