Dubbo's Fundraiser To Aid Local Footballer

The Dubbo Greyhound Racing Club will stage a special fundraiser on this evening to help raise money for a local rugby league player who suffered serious injuries playing for Dubbo CYMS earlier this month.

Ryan Medley remains in hospital after suffering serious spinal and neck injuries in a recent rugby league match. Playing in his first game in six years, Medley sustained the injuries in a seemingly innocuous on-field collision earlier this month.

Monies collected at this evening’s meeting at Dubbo will go to help Medley and his family pay for his ongoing rehabilitation care.

Dubbo club president Shayne Stiff said the club and local participants were very keen to help the fundraising appeal for the Medley family, which has already raised about $100,000.

“Ryan’s family run an air conditioning contracting business and they do all our air conditioning here at the track,” Stiff said.

“They have been great supporters for us over the years and do a lot of work in the community. We were more than happy to help how we can.”

Gate receipts from the 11-race meeting and monies collected from a raffle and collection will be donated to the appeal.

Dubbo is a country community and in times of need this is what we do,” Stiff said.

“Football and racing are two of the biggest things here in Dubbo, plus we host other fundraising events at the club whenever we can.

“We welcome anyone in the area to come down and enjoy what should be a great evening of racing.”

On the track, much attention will be on exciting newcomer Just Magic in race nine (400m).

The latest star prospect from the gun NSW Central West kennel of Paul Braddon, Just Magic (box eight) had a smart win on debut over this trip last week.

Racing at Dubbo starts at 5.09pm and will be televised on Sky Racing.
