Magic Spring Could Return A Winner

By Jeff Collerson

Magic Spring has not raced for five weeks but the National Derby winner is trialling well enough to be able to make a remarkable comeback at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

The Noelene Holloway-trained greyhound has box four in heat one of the 520m Ladbrokes Monthly Medal (race four, 520m).

"Magic Spring trialled 25.20 over 450m at Maitland last Friday, which is good, and then went extra well up my local straight trial track on Tuesday," Holloway said.

"Saturday's race is not like a red-hot top grade lineup and as this series is for older greyhounds there are no up-and-coming young stars against Magic Spring. It looks an ideal race for him at this stage of his comeback preparation."

In other Wentworth Park action, Sydney financial advisor Michael Eberand, who breeds, owns and trains greyhounds as a hobby, has a strong chance of landing a winning double on Saturday night.

Eberand will be represented by Ebby Chance in a 5th grade event (race two, 520m) and by her older half-brother Barking Bad in a 4/5th grade race (race three, 520m).

"Ebby Chance is well drawn near the rails because she wants an inside box and has endured a frustrating sequence of unsuitable wide alleys," Eberand said.

"There is a bit of early pace around her but if she can get a clear run to the first turn and finds a position on the fence I expect her to win. Ebby Chance has clocked 30 seconds flat at Wenty and is going as well as she was then.

"I tested Barking Bad as a stayer over 715m at Sandown, Melbourne last week, and he failed to run the distance. But he pulled up so well I decided to nominate him for this 520m race on Saturday."

Patch Adam looks a solid bet jumping from box one in a 3/4th grade race (race eight, 520m).

Patch Adam is owned by Hunter Valley breeders Helen and Max Rimmer who were unable to sell the greyhound when he was a pup.

The Rimmers have had the last laugh though because Patch Adam is a leading candidate for Saturday week's Peter Mosman Classic series, which is worth $75,000 to the winner of the June 17 final.

Meanwhile, Saturday's fourth heat of the Ladbrokes Monthly Medal looks a perfect race for Mack Tux, who drops sharply in class after being a finalist in the Group 1 Ladbrokes Golden Easter Egg on April 15.

Mack Tux has drawn six but his brilliant early speed should offset his wide draw, as he has won four of his six races from boxes six and seven.
