Quick Jagger Primed To Dominate WA Derby

By Stuart Turner

Talented greyhound Quick Jagger headlines tonight’s heats of the Group 2 WA Derby (520m) at Cannington.

Quick Jagger scored his third track record at Cannington last start, lowering his previous 29.48 mark with a superb 29.29 run last weekend, and is now perfectly drawn in box three to capitalise on his good form in the fourth and final heat (race six) of the WA Derby

One of the stars of the leading Chris Halse kennel, Quick Jagger exploded onto the scene with his first track record – a 29.54 effort at only his third start – in February.

Following that, Quick Jagger travelled to Sandown Park in Victoria but was unsuccessful in two runs. But the greyhound has been in good form since his return to Perth, leading to his track record run last start.

In other heats, track specialist Black Bombshell looks the top pick from box six in the first heat (race three) of the $40,000-to-the-winner series, which is open to male greyhounds whelped on or after November 1, 2014.

The Enzo Crudeli-trained greyhound had no joy in the recent Mandurah Derby heats but has won five of his six previous races over this trip at Cannington, including a blazing 29.72 effort on March 25.

Crudeli has enjoyed a memorable 2017 so far, including winning the Group 1 Perth Cup with Equanimity and could be celebrating more success in this race.

Pyredos Monelli (box two) clocked 29.59 over this trip two starts back and looks the biggest danger in this heat.

Black Bombshell’s kennelmate Sassy Ginger has been solid rather than spectacular recently but looks the top pick in race four over in the second heat (race four).

One of the most experienced greyhounds in the series,. Sassy Ginger has built the impressive record of 16 wins and seven minor placings from35 starts.

He has not won since his dazzling 29.53 triumph at Cannington five starts back but has recorded some strong times over this distance and has placed in two of his three previous starts from box four.

Astrozone (box seven) went just 0.01 outside the track record while winning the Mandurah Derby on April 28 - defeating Quick Jagger in the process - and looks the top pick in the third heat (race five).

One of the stars of the gun Paul Stuart kennel, Astrozone clocked a sizzling 29.49 at Cannington in March and has built the imposing record of 14 wins and four minor placings from 23 starts.

Best value chance for the series looks like Neil Monelli, who will jump from box one in that third heat.

The David Hobby-trained greyhound finished eighth at Mandurah last start but has scored eight wins and seven minor placings from 17 races.

He has only had one previous start from box one so should relish this draw and has an impressive best of 29.59 over this trip.

The four heat winners and runners-up progress to next Saturday’s decider.
