Dawn Mini Records Big Win In Ladies Bracelet

By Jeff Collerson

Dawn Mini reproduced her scintillating heat form to lead throughout and win the Group 3 Evans & Son Jewellers Ladies Bracelet at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

Sent out as a $21 outsider despit being the fastest heat winner, Dawn Mini came out "under the lids" to record a slick 29.94 victory.

Those figures were 0.06 faster than when she set the time standard in the heats on April 29 and was a fraction quicker than the 30.08 recorded by Zipping Lilly in the 2016 Bracelet.

Dawn Mini won comfortably by two lengths from second favourite She's Grand, who was third in the middle stages, and favourite Lagoon Jazzy, who dwelt at box rise but was fourth from the back straight to the home turn.

Dawn Mini's owner-trainer Keith Pedrana bred the greyhound by mating Songar Mini Mag, a greyhound he purchased after a claiming race at The Gardens, with his former great stud dog Brett Lee.

"I don't trial (Dawn Mini), I only race her, and although she is only 25kg she is a little iron greyhound," Pedrana said.

"I was hoping for box one in the final because Dawn Mini is such a good railer but when my youngest daughter Tiana drew out box five I didn't mind because that is not a bad alley at Wentworth Park."

In other action at Wentworth Park, Chevy King confirmed his ranking as early favourite for next month's Group 1 Peter Mosman Classic by scoring his fifth successive win at the Glebe track in Saturday night's Free-For-All.

The Christine Proctor-trained greyhound led throughout to defeat his kennelmate Sound Advice by just over two lengths in 29.84.

"I thought he was nicely drawn tonight because Chevy King had box three and my other starter, Sound Advice, had box one," Proctor said.

"Sound Advice is desperate for an inside box so I knew he would stick to the fence and would not run out and hamper Chevy King. While I was delighted with Chevy King's win, I was surprised at how well Sound Advice went because I did not expect him to run a place in a top grade event like this.

"He is improving all the time but the irony is that his litter brother Son Of Katie, who is a very wide runner, broke in faster but has yet to win in eight races at Wenty. Yet Sound Advice has had three wins and three placings from nine starts in town."

Charrua was trained in Queensland for Sydney owner Jimmy Corbo until JODIE Van Enkhuyzen and her partner Peter Lagogione returned from Dubai earlier this year.

The switch to Van Enkhuyzen's Llandilo kennels has paid off with Charrua finishing second at Wentworth Park on April 22 and then leading throughout for a runaway win in a nippy 30.11 on Saturday.

"JODIE and Peter trained greyhounds like Enter The Dragon and Sugar Ray Lee for me a couple of years back but when they went to Dubai for a spell I had Charrua with a mate in Brisbane," Corbo said.

"This dog has had a few issues but led when second at Wentworth Park on April 22 and improved a lot to lead throughout tonight. And we think he has still more improvement in him."

Darren Sultana was Saturday's most successful trainer, landing a double with Cosmic Vintage and Starburst Bassy, while the JODIE Lord-trained Old Bailey posted the fastest time of the night - 29.73 - when leading throughout in a fifth grade event.

See you next week!
