Prevail To Benefit From Drop In Class

By Jeff Collerson

A drop in class coupled with an ideal box draw should pave the way for Prevail's fifth Wentworth Park win on Wednesday night.

The Craig Chappelow-trained greyhound, who finished fourth against the best female greyhounds in NSW in a heat of the Group 3 Ladies Bracelet last Saturday night, has box one in race one – a fourth and fifth grade over 520m.

With wide runners in boxes two, four, five and six, Prevail should only need to begin cleanly to lead all the way.

“She has only had box one twice before and while she won once, she should have had a perfect record from the rails trap,” Chappelow said.

“In her only loss from box one she jumped in front and made the early pace but tore chest muscles and broke down at Wentworth Park.

“When Prevail finished fourth to Dawn Mini in her heat of the  Ladies Bracelet last Saturday she was only missed qualifying for this week's final by three hundredths of a second.

“That was disappointing but hopefully she can pick up a consolation prize for me on Wednesday.”

Prevail has been in the best form of her career, recording sizzling 30.62 and 29.91 wins at Richmond">Richmond and Wentworth Park before her fourth place finish last Saturday.

Prevail is the only greyhound in Wednesday night's field to have broken the 30 second barrier at Wentworth Park, with a 29.81 personal best performance from box four last November.

In other action at Wentworth Park, brilliant beginner Wonelova Gunn makes her debut for Richmond trainer Rod Metselaar in the fourth heat of the Ladbrokes Up For The Challenge Series (race five, 520m).

Wonelova Gunn was unbeaten in her first six races on provincial tracks before leading and being placed in each of her two Wentworth Park outings.

“I have had her in my kennels for a fortnight and have been sprinting her up the straight every two days,” Meteselaar said.

“She has not been around a circle track since her last Wenty run but the straight work has her fit enough.

"Wonelova Gunn has got tired at the end of the 520m in her two Wentworth Park races but I'm hoping that like a lot of greyhounds, she acquires more strength as she gets older.

“In any case, I would rather have a front-runner who is not strong at the finish than a greyhound which runs home well but has no early pace.

“With greyhounds that are slow early you are looking for lucky runs all the time but front-runners are always a chance of making their own luck.”

Head Wreck, raced by a syndicate headed by Sky Racing broadcaster Luke Marlow, should break through for his first Wentworth Park win in Wednesday's sixth Ladbrokes Up For The Challenge heat (race seven, 520m).

Head Wreck has been placed in each of two Wentworth Park starts after registering six wins and seven placings on country tracks.

The Brian Tame-trained greyhound bungled the start when third from box four at his city debut on April 19 before coming from fourth early when a fast-finishing second to Afrojack last Wednesday.

Head Wreck has drawn perfectly on Wednesday in box one, with Like Zeus, a moderate beginner in box two, likely to give him a clear run to the crucial first turn.

Wednesday night also features two heats of the distance Ladbrokes Up For The Challenge Series over 720, with Midnite Party (heat one, race nine) and Oakdale Miss (heat two, race 10) looming as the likely winners. None of their rivals has been able to match their best winning long-distance times at Wentworth Park.
