Bogie Bekim Sets Time Standard In Cup Heats

By Jeff Collerson

Bogie Bekim will head into Saturday night's Group 1 Association Cup as the fastest qualifier after winning his heat in 41.96.

Trained at Lewiston, near Adelaide, by Ben Rawlings, Bogie Bekim came from third early on to win his heat by three lengths.

The greyhound is now a $3.40 chance with Ladbrokes to claim Saturday night's group 1 for stayers after he drew box two for the feature event.

"I flew Bogie Bekim to Sydney on Tuesday, took him straight to Wenty and trialled him over 520m," Rawlings said.

"He clocked 29.85 and ran home in 11.50 so I expected him to go close to winning tonight."

The other Association Cup heat was won by Trip To Eden in 42.22.

Trip To Eden, widely regarded as Australia's best stayer, was seventh at box rise but swept around his rivals to win by five lengths.

Trained in Victoria by Seona Thompson for Newcastle owner-breeder Steve Connor, Trip To Eden has now won four of his past five starts.

"He only ran wide tonight because he is smart," Connor said later.

"Trip To Eden is a railer but after his slow start he realised there was no room on the inside so went around his rivals at the first turn.

Trip To Eden is $2.50 favourite to win the Association Cup with Ladbrokes after drawing box three.

Sydney's best hope in the Association Cup is Ebby Ripper, who has box four.

But the Michael Eberand-trained greyhound gives her opponents long starts and after being 20 lengths off the lead at one stage, ran Bogie Bekim to three lengths when second in her heat.

Box draw for the Group 1 Association Cup is: 1. Miss Foxy Lee 2. Bogie Bekim 3. Trip To Eden 4. Ebby Ripper 5. Obi Kenobi 6. Gunnadoo Cove 7. Allen Lottery 8. My Boy Brodie. Reserves: 9. Teddy Monelli 10. Midnite Party.
