Watch The Wasp Headlines Magic Maiden Heats

By Stuart Turner

Watch The Wasp, who broke the track record at Bathurst in a performance trial recently, headlines Wednesday’s Group 3 Ladbrokes Magic Maiden (520m) heats.

The son of Wentworth Park track record holder Shakey Jakey and Midnight News looks the latest star from the David Pringle kennel in the NSW Central West and jumps from box eight in the seventh of nine heats of the $25,000-to-the-winner series.

Watch the Wasp showed sizzling speed to clock 25.44 in his performance trial at Bathurst - .01 below Talking Point’s official track record from – on March 20 and could be a potential star.

Litter brother and kennelmate Midnight Secret, who has run a decent 30.19 for the 516m performance trial at Dubbo, jumps from box five in heat one.

Others to watch in the maidens-only series include Zipping Chang (box six, heat three), who has had a strong performance trial over the 450m at Maitland and Shockwave">Shockwave (box seven, heat five), a newcomer from the gun Dean Swain kennel.

Shockwave has had two strong performance trials so far, including a 29.94 effort at Gosford on February 28.

Trainer Jason Magri won the 2016 race with Wicked Warrior and could have a decent chance this year with Miss Gambler (box seven, heat six).

Miss Gambler clocked 30.11 in a 520m performance trial at Dapto on March 23 and is highly rated by Magri.

Best value chance for the series could be the Ruth King-trained Here’s Dave, who jumps from box four in heat five.

The well-bred son of Fabregas and Ready To Riot showed decent pace while clocking 22.54 in a performance trial over the 400m at Bulli last month

The Group 3 Ladbrokes Magic Maiden is a three-week series and kicks off this year’s Golden Easter Egg carnival, NSW's biggest event of the year.

Semi-finals are on Wednesday, April 5, with the final one of five feature race finals on Saturday, April 15.
