Mendoza Monelli Ready To Fire At Cannington

By Stuart Turner

Flying newcomer Mendoza Monelli looks the one to watch in Saturday night’s Canning Trophy (race five, 520m) at Cannington.

The latest star from the gun David Hobby kennel jumps from box seven in the decider - the night’s feature race - aiming to further improve his impressive record of six wins and five minor placings from 15 starts so far.

Mendoza Monelli caught the eye with a brilliant 29.64 run over the 520m at Cannington on January 28, defeating a class field that included former Cannington track record holder Single Sticka.

The greyhound has run well since then, scoring one win and four minor placings in six starts. He finished second behind Blank Space in last week’s heats jumping from box five but should put in a better run from a wider draw and has the talent to win this.

Mendoza Monelli will have to be at his best though as she is up against a class field.

West On Delly (box one) finished a narrow second behind Max Profit last week and is strong from the inside, while recent Group 1 Sky Racing Perth Cup winner Equanimity (box two) is racing brilliantly and also looks a strong contender.

Best value chance looks like Capital Zed (box eight), an impressive newcomer who has won two of his last three starts and placed in both of his previous starts wearing the pink rug.

The exceptionally well bred son of Barcia Bale and Zelemar Fever clocked a moderate 30.33 while winning his heat last week but should benefit from the wide draw and could go close with a clear run.

In other Cannington Saturday action, the talented Times Square (box two) drops back to the 520m after some brilliant efforts over the 600m but looks the best bet in the Community Newspaper Group Stakes (race four, 520m).

A star of the gun CHRIS Halse kennel, Times Square has won her last three races – all over the 600m – but clocked a dazzling 29.79 over the 520m on January 28.

Pavel Monelli (box eight) has a strong record over the 380m and can score another win over that distance in the Get The TAbTouch Stakes (race nine).

The newcomer from the gun David Hobby kennel has won four times and placed four times in nine previous races over this distance and looks capable of handling a wide draw.

Art Nouveau (box eight) is another CHRIS Halse-trained greyhound and looks the night’s best bet in the Love The Chase Stakes (race 10, 520m).

Another from the Barcia Bale and Zelemar Fever litter, Art Nouveau ran a brilliant 29.67 at Cannington three starts back and also won here last Monday night in 30.27.
