Hannaford's Bonnie Chance At Wentworth Park

By Jeff Collerson

Litter sisters Walkaway Bonnie and Walkaway Annie gave Bungendore trainer Lesley Hannaford her first city double in 25 years' training in last week's heats and the former has a huge box draw advantage in Wednesday night's 520m Fifth Grade Final at Wentworth Park.

Walkaway Bonnie was the fastest heat winner, leading throughout in 30.04, while Walkaway Annie led all the way in 30.42.

In the final Walkaway Bonnie has box two while her litter sister and kennelmate has box four.

"Walkaway Bonnie has a good draw because she had never seen Wentworth Park before winning her heat,'' Hannaford said.

"My only concern is that Walkaway Annie crashes to the left when the boxes open so I hope she does not take her sister out in the run to the first turn.''

Mark Bell, whose greyhound Nana Road was second fastest heat winner with a 30.11 performance, despaired when he learned his greyhound had drawn box three.

"I have had greyhounds drawn inside Walkaway Annie on four occasions recently and each time she has veered left at box rise and put my greyhounds out of business,'' Bell said.

"My best chance on Wednesday night is Central Bark, even though he has box five in race two, a 520m fifth grade.

"He was unlucky when third at Wentworth Park last Wednesday as he did something funny at the start and then was badly checked at the first turn.

"Central Bark is going well. If he had drawn boxes one or two I this week I would have been very confident, but when he jumps reasonably well he can show great acceleration in the charge to the first turn so I expect him to run a big race.''

Lesley Hannaford could land another winning double as apart from the 'Walkaway sisters' in the fifth grade final, she has a strong chance with Vast, who has box three in race one, another 520m fifth grade.

Vast's best Wentworth Park time of 30.24 was recorded from box seven but Hannaford prefers him drawn close to the rails.

"He has won four of five races when he has drawn box two so the nearer to the fence he is drawn the better I like it,'' Hannaford said.

"Being in an early race with also suit Vast and from his good draw he should run well.''

Rockstar Roy is chasing a winning hat-trick when he makes his Wentworth Park debut in race 10 on Wednesday but trainer James Porter is cautious about his greyhound's prospects.

"He has not raced or been trialled at Wenty so it is all going to be new to him,'' Porter said.

"Rockstar Roy has ability and trialled 25.25 over 450m at Maitland and then a smart 29.72 over 515m at The Gardens before he raced.

"He is well drawn in box two but although he is usually a good beginner, he has a flat spot after 10 metres or so. He will go inside or around his rivals and if he is chasing one or two of his opponents on the back straight he has a good show.

"In fact he seems to run his best races when he is chasing another dog.''
