Lochinvar Hugo Looking A Sensational Prospect

By Jeff Collerson

Lochninvar Hugo will be set for the Group 3 New Sensation during Wentworth Park's Golden Easter Egg carnival following his record breaking performance at Maitland last Thursday.

Having only his seventh start, the 23 month old Robert Smith-trained juvenile led throughout to easily defeat the highly talented Elantris in a blistering 31.34.

That easily eclipsed the previous Maitland 565m record of 31.41sec established by No Donuts in November, 2015.

No Donuts went on to win 25 of 53 races and earn $324,000 in stakes for owner Brad Canty and Lochinvar Hugo, with four victories and three seconds, could be on the way to similar fame and fortune.

"I will nominate Lochinvar Hugo for Wentworth Park this week because his goal is the New Sensation, over 520m there with heats on April 5,'' Smith said.

"He is an exciting young dog because he seems to be able to 'find' a bit more every time he races.

"The New Sensation is an age restricted race so that looks ideal for him at this stage.''

The DEAN Swain-trained Tilly's Boy took out last year's New Sensation in 29.81, with Lord Gee scoring for Christine Proctor in in 20.15 in 30.13.

Inaugural winner was Charmed Assassin at 29.76 in 20.13 while the Victorian-trained Hooksy remains the fastest victor with a near track record performance of 29.36 in 2014.

It's hard to beat experience and Ken Cheetham's 68 years' involvement with greyhounds came to the fore last week when the 80-year-old Hunter Valley trainer snared the quinella in a 520m fifth grade at Wentworth Park.

And Kissing Carter proved that win was no fluke with another victory on Tuesday night, flashing home to defeat dead-heaters Uncle Grub and Celebrate, a Wentworth Park winner.

Kissing Carter is raced by Anthony Mcvicker, a prolific owner who lives on the NSW Central Coast, had led throught at Wentworth Park to win by 12 lengths from her kennelmate Midnite Party in a handy 30.33.

Mcvicker, who is involved in real estate, said: "I have greyhounds racing in every state.

"The best greyhound I have raced would be Shifty Sticka, who was one of the favourites for the 2013 Melbourne Cup won by Black Magic Opal.

"Cheeto is doing a fantastic job with Kissing Carter while I am also having a great run with her brother, the WA-trained Single Sticka, who has won 16 of 32 races in Perth.''

Kissing Carter's Wentworth Park win was a just reward for her consistency as she had been placed in two of five previous Wentworth Park outings and now has an overall record of 34 starts for eight wins and eight placings.

Midnite Party, who chased her home at Wenty, has now been placed in three of four 520m appearances there but her first city win looks close at hand, probably over 720m.

Their trainer Cheetham, a greyhound racing legend, said: "I grew up in Millthorpe, in the NSW western districts, where I began handling greyhounds as a 12-year-old.

"I turn 81 in June and these days I only have four in work but am happy and going great considering I nearly died a couple of years back.

"My wife Marie and my daughter probably saved my life because while in hospital, battling cancer, I was about to be hit with a massive dose of morphine.

"But my daughter and wife thought I would be better off at home and while I spent 18 months in bed, they nursed me back to health.''

Ken Cheetham is among the few trainers to have prepared two NSW Greyhound of the Year award winners, having trained 1992 recipient How's The Fort and the brilliant Take The Kitty, who won the title in 2009.

Your Shout Punk will resume his career in Victoria despite his brilliant all-the-way win in Thursday's 400m Maitland Gold Collar final.

The NSW-owned greyhound was trained for the Gold Collar by leading Sydney trainer Mark Gatt, who revealed the dog is about to return to his Victorian trainer.

"Your Shout Punk was sent up to me to contest the 472m Bulli Gold Cup series in February but he wasn't quite up to that class,'' Gatt said.

"But he is a high speed dog and the 400m course at Maitland was ideal.

"Your Shout Punk did win a race over 520m at Wentworth Park in February last year but he is really a 400m greyhound and there are more opportunities for him down south.''
