Big Butters Can Bowl Them Over At Wentworth Park

By Jeff Collerson

Kennelmates Big Butters and Bowlin' Spinnaz have the box positions to upset fastest qualifier Black Jack Opal in tonight's Gosford To Wenty Final at Wentworth Park.

The race – the second on the card over 520m - comprises greyhounds which contested heats at Gosford on February 14.

Black Jack Opal won his heat easily in 29.95, with the Andrew Crouch-trained Bowlin' Spinnaz and Big Butters the other heat winners, clocking 30.32 and 30.36 respectively.

While Black Jack Opal won in a much quicker time, the Crouch duo have drawn perfectly for tonight’s final with Bowlin’ Spinnaz in box one and Big Butters right alongside her in box two. Black Jack Opal, meanwhile, finds himself in box six.

Crouch is obviously delighted with the draw for his two greyhounds and believes they are both winning chances.

Before they raced at Gosford I gave each of my greyhounds a post-to-post hand-slip at Wentworth Park and Bowlin' Spinnaz went quicker,” the South Windsor trainer said.

“But because Big Butters has more early speed I lean slightly to her as my better chance on Wednesday night.

“My son Adam, who assists with their training, wanted to see Bowlin' Spinnaz drawn out wide but the rails is definitely better for her than being boxed in the middle.

“Box two should be perfect for Big Butters because from there she has a great chance of being the early leader.

“Hopefully Bowlin' Spinnaz will be sitting on her tail in the middle stages because then they would each have a great chance.”

In other action at Wentworth Park this evening, Six Sense’s chances of winning race nine (520m) should be boosted by the small field, according to her assistant trainer Cliff Rice.

“Six Sense has box four but there are only seven runners and having box five vacant should help her,” Rice, whose wife Loretta trains Six Sense, said.

“It is a shame Six Sense doesn't have a bit more early pace, but if she did she probably would not finish as strongly as she does now.

“She really gets to the line powerfully and as there seems to be a fair amount of early zip among her rivals this week, the race could be run to suit Six Sense.

Lehigh Model is boxed to break through for her first Wentworth Park win in 13 starts after drawing ideally in box one in race five (520m).

The Steve Cleary-trained greyhound has been placed in four of her 12 Wentworth Park races and has won two of her nine outings from box one.

She had box two when third to Full Of Rust and Old Bailey in a slightly tougher race at Wentworth Park last Saturday night.

“From box one this week nothing should be able to get underneath Lehigh Model which will suit her,” Cleary said

Lehigh Model is a good little trier and certainly has her best box.”
