Lekey Can Turn The Screw At Gosford

By Stuart Turner

Lindsay Davis believes Lekey can make a successful transition to the stayers’ ranks with victory at Gosford on Tuesday night.

The daughter of Djays Octane and Key Exit jumps from box two in the West Valley Excavation 0-3 Stakes (race eight, 731m) aiming to improve her record of three wins and six minor placings from 18 starts.

This will be a first go over the 700 metres for Lekey, who scored a decent 35.11 victory over the 600m at Unibet Gardens on her last start.

Lekey’s sister Frekey has won over the 720m at Wentworth Park and Lekey looks capable of repeating that performance tonight.

“If she’s anything like her sister then she should go well,” owner-trainer Davis said.

“I think Lekey is a bit stronger than her kennelmate Boomkey, who has box six in this race. Lekey always gives her all and usually comes home nicely.

“The whole line have been strong 700 metre greyhounds and hopefully she will continue that trend.”

Lekey has two other wins over the 515m to her name and looks the standout in an even race.

In other Gosford action, hot newcomer Black Jack Opal looks ready to return in winning fashion.

The impeccably bred son of Barcia Bale and Glamorous Opal jumps from box six in the 5th grade Decay Memorial Gosford-Wentworth Park Heat one (race three, 515m) aiming to further improve his impressive record of five wins and two minor placings from seven starts.

Black Jack Opal, whose uncle Black Magic Opal won the 2013 Melbourne Cup and 35 of his 48 starts in a brilliant career, has been out of action since placing at Unibet Gardens on December 9.

Two of his wins have been over the 515m and he has won both his previous starts from box six.

Big Butters (box five) is another eye-catching newcomer and looks the top pick in the 5th grade Stellers Tavern Gosford-Wenty Heat two (race seven, 515m).

The Andrew Crouch-trained greyhound has won two of her four starts so far including a super 29.93 effort at Dapto last week over the 520m.

Kennelmate Bowlin’ Spinnaz (box six) also saluted at Dapto last week and looks capable of saluting again in the 5th grade The Mountain Supporters Gosford-Wenty Heat Three (race nine, 515m).

The well-bred son of Bekim Bale and Avondale Miss has also triumphed at Bulli and Cannington in WA and has shown impressive early speed so far.

Short course star Camacho (box eight) can continue Hunter Valley trainer Ronnie Bell’s recent strong run of success with victory in a high-class Masters grade Seagull Life members Stakes (race 11, 400m).

The son of Fabregas and Us Five has won 26 races in his distinguished career and is still racing well, with placings in his last two starts.

He faces a quality field here but has a decent record from box eight and has won on two of his last three visits to Gosford.
