Pantera Nera Set To Conquer Launceston Cup

By Stuart Turner

Pantera Nera looks a strong chance to write his name into the racing history books with victory in tonight’s Group 2 Total Car Rentals Launceston Cup (515m).

The brilliant Victorian and multiple Group winner jumps from box two in the $40,000-to-the-winner decider aiming to become just the fourth greyhound to win the Devenport-Launceston cup double on the Apple Isle.

The Gavin Burke-trained greyhound has been in storming form so far in the three-week series, winning both his heat and semi-final.

Pantera Nera clocked a storming 29.59 victory in the semi-finals, cruising home by six lengths and looks ready to add another major title to his distinguished career.

The son of Mildean Panther and Go Jessie’s Girl also looks well positioned, having scored two wins and a placings wearing the checks.

After claiming his third group title with victory in the Devonport Cup last month, Pantera Nera returned home briefly for an unsuccessful crack at the Group 2 Warragul Cup heats.

The only question is whether his heavy schedule may catch up with him tonight but on current form he looks the one to beat.

Chief Jetpilot (box four), trained by gun local mentor Ted Medhurst, has built the formidable record of 17 wins and 20 minor placings from 42 starts and looks the next best bet.

Fifteen Two was a notch below his best while finishing second in last week’s semi-finals, but also looks a danger from box one.

The Dale Hammersley-trained greyhound has won two of his three starts from box one and clocked a sizzling 29.78 in the heats.

Wynburn Toozie (box eight) clocked 29.92 in both the heats and semi-finals and looks possibly the best value chance, but has the modest record of one win in four starts wearing the pink rug.

Nangar Range (box three), Tricky Tails (box five), Long View Belle (box six) and Justifia (box seven) complete the field.

The Group 2 Curtains And Blinds Launceston Cup is race eight on the card at Launceston tonight.
