Astrozone Among Stars Of Perth Cup Heats

By Stuart Turner

Track record holder Astrozone and hot local Pepper Fire look two of the standout chances in the Group 1 Sky Racing Perth Cup (520m) heats while interstate raiders Bogie Bekim and It’s A Fling are winning chances in the Group 1 Sky Racing Galaxy Cup (715m) at Cannington.

Astrozone (box one) is one of the stars of the gun local Paul Stuart kennel and  looks ideally positioned to score yet another win in the second of eight heats of the cup.

The impressive son of Cosmic Rumble and Starlight Delly has won 11 of his 12 starts so far and ran a dazzling 29.56 at Cannington three starts back.

He should be joined in next Saturday night’s $150,000-to-the-winner decider by Pepper Fire, who jumps from box four in the third heat.

The CHRIS Halse-trained greyhound is in dazzling form, having won her last three starts.

Last year’s Group 3 South Australia Oaks winner and last month’s Group 3 Birthday Cup winner has won three of her five previous starts wearing the blue rug and should have enough pace to defeat this field.

Others to watch in the series include in-form Krugerrand (box two, heat four) and track specialist Penny Monelli (box seven, heat six).

The eight heat winners progress to next Saturday’s decider.

Bogie Bekim (box one), one of the stars of the South Australian kennel of Ben Rawlings, looks the top pick in the first heat of the Galaxy.

The son of Bekim Bale and Bogie Skye has won his last four starts and warmed up for the series with a solid six-length triumph at Cannington last Saturday night.

It’s A Fling had no joy in last Saturday night’s Group 2 Summer Distance Plate but can atone from box two in the second heat.

The daughter of Collision and It’s A Blur has mixed form recently but is a class act over this distance and can return to winning ways in this heat.

Teddy Monelli (box two) and Winsome April (box eight) look the top pick in heats three and four respectively.

The four heat winners and runners-up progress to next Saturday’s final, which offers $100,000 to the winner.
