Alfie Aims To Hit Right Note At Richmond

By Stuart Turner

Alfie is named after a singing star and he looks ready to strike another winning note at Richmond tonight.

The red hot pup jumps from box eight in the Giavisor Australia 1-4 Wins (race 10, 618m) Heat having won his last four starts.

After going winless in his first nine starts, he has recorded a quartet of smart triumphs over the 600m at Gosford and Unibet Gardens.

He is named after Alfie Arcuri, winner of the 2016 instalment of  The Voice Australia – one of owner-trainer Lorraine Atchison’s favourite shows.

“I don’t watch much television, but I love The Voice,” she said. “I love it even more now.

“It’s taken a while for Alfie to find his best racing form but he deserves a gold medal for how he’s done. I’m so proud of him.

“This is his first look at Richmond. I’m a  little concerned he may get lost on a new track, but the way he’s racing at the moment, I have to be optimistic he can win.”

Alfie chalked up his latest victory at Gosford last Tuesday night, pipping Tarawi Skye in a thrilling finish.

Tarawi Skye jumps from box seven in this race and looks the biggest danger, with Billy Keeping (box six) probably the only other realistic challenger to Alfie.

Atchison’s greyhound finished fifth on his only previous look at the 720m at Wentworth Park, but Atchison is keen to take him back to the Sydney circuit soon.

“I’m sure he’ll have another crack at 700 metres – I’m just not sure he’ll run a decent time,” Atchison said.

“He’s a wonderful, sweet-natured greyhound with a beautiful temperament. He’s a joy to have around.

“I’m sure he can get a few more wins yet.”

Melan (box one) is racing well and looks the best bet in the 5th grade Evolution Windows Stakes (race seven, 535m).

The Sam Sultana-trained greyhound has won twice and placed three times in  seven starts  and won over this trip from the same draw in August.

Kennelmate Hooter Harnett also looks a strong chance to salute in the 5th grade Bess Electrical Stakes (race eight, 535m).

The well-bred son of Oaks Road and Mulberry Street has been running over longer recently but has built a solid record and looks the class act of this field

Nadal (box seven) is yet to fulfil his exciting potential but can score a win for gun western Sydney trainer Dean Swain in the Wentworth Leagues Club 1-4 Wins Heat One (618m, race nine).
