Bessy Boo Retired

By Jeff Collerson

The mighty Bessy Boo (pictured) has run his last race, with trainer Christine Proctor fittingly announcing the champ's retirement after the final Wentworth Park meeting of 2016.

Dubbed 'the king of Wentworth Park' for his amazing exploits, he heads to a life of luxury after winning a record 34 races at headquarters, three over 720m and 31 over the 520m trip.

Bessy Boo failed to beat one home in Aqua Dragon's fourth grade race on Friday night and after the race was found to have a hind leg muscle injury.

"He has been injury free throughout his career so this tells us he has had enough,'' Proctor's husband Alan said.

Bessy Boo, who was an engagement present to his owner Ashley Wilson, earned a whopping $337,311 in stakes.

He finishes with the incredible career record of 44 wins and 55 minor placings from 158 starts, including victory in the 2014 Group 1 Peter Mosman Classic.

In other Wentworth Park Friday night action, Good Odds Angel took her earnings past the $100,000 with her 10th Wentworth Park win in Friday night's Free-For-All

Good Odds Angel, who turned three in October, posted a sizzling second split of 13.76 on the way to covering the 520m in 29.90

Friday's meeting provided an unexpected windfall for Cowra owner-trainer Paul Braddon after his National Derby candidate Falcon's Fury led throughout in a 520m fifth grade.

Falcon's Fury not only snared the $4800 first prizemoney but was drawn out as the GBOTA's jackpot greyhound which meant victory reaped an additional $3600 for his owner-trainer.

Falcon's Fury, who has now won eight of 12 races, recorded blistering sectionals of 5.39, 13.70 and 17.81 before beating Chaser by three lengths in 29.69.

That time was among the quickest clocked in 20.16 and compared well with El Magnifico's 29.59 fastest of the year effort recorded on June 11.

Although Falcon's Fury's overall time was sensational, his quick first split was surpassed later in Friday's meeting by the Betty Keene-trained Liberty Lee.

That greyhound exploded from the boxes and led all the way, producing an almost unheard of first split of 5.29.

Liberty Lee's opening sectional time was only .06 outside the Wentworth Park record held by the Luke Azzopardi-trained Estranged.

"Liberty Lee has always had terrific early pace and soon after she was educated, well before she had her first race, she trialled 15.70sec, just .14sec outside the track record, in a 270m hit-out at The Gardens,'' Keene said.

See you next week!
