It's A Bird Ready to Fly In Summer Cup Heats

By Stuart Turner

Recent Group race winners It’s A Bird and Ring The Bell are among the headline acts for this Saturday night's Group 3 Ladbrokes Summer Cup (720m) heats at Wentworth Park.

Record-breaking champion Bessy Boo (pictured) and recent Goulburn Cup winner Clock’s Ticking are also among the headline acts for what looks a superb meeting.

It’s A Bird, a winner of the Group 1 Bold Trease earlier this month, jumps from box five in the first of two heats of the $25,000-to-the-winner series.

Now in the kennel of gun Western Sydney trainer Mark Gatt, It’s A Bird finished sixth on her last start after scoring three successive victories at Sandown Park.

She is a class act over this distance but will have to contend with Lovelace (box one), a winner over the 720m at Wentworth Park last Saturday night, and ever-dangerous stayer Whittaker (box two).

Miss Foxy Lee (box eight) has an unpromising record from box eight but looks to be improving and could be the one to beat.

Apatite (box three), who scored a surprise win in the Group 3 Sydney Cup last month and has raced solidly recently, is also in contention.

Gunnadoo Cove (box one) has won her last four starts – all over the 720m at Wentworth Park – and will have plenty of support in the second heat.

The John Heard-trained pup, a daughter of Wentworth Park 520m record-holder Shakey Jakey, has won all three of her previous starts from box one and looks a strong contender.

Her opposition will include classy Victorian Ring The Bell (box seven), the 2016 Group 1 National Distance winner and a consistent recent performer who has placed on both her previous visits to Wentworth Park.

Clock’s Ticking will jump from box eight in a high-quality Free-For-All @WPGrey on Twitter Stakes (520m, race four) aiming to score a sixth win in his last eight starts.

The Jason Magri-trained star backed up his win at Goulburn with a classy triumph over the 520m at Wentworth Park last Saturday night from box eight.

Bessy Boo, who extended his record-breaking number of Wentworth Park victories to 34 with a trademark come-from-behind win last Saturday night, jumps from box one in a terrific 4/5th grade Ladbrokes Monthly Medal Stakes (520m, race eight).

The ‘King of Wentworth Park’ won from this box at Wentworth Park last month in 30.26 but faces a field including Winsome Amanda (box two), Got A Motor (box three), Virouette in box four,  Tap Out Axe in box six and Kyah’s Comet in box eight - all winners at Wentworth Park last Saturday night.

Good Odds Bricky (box seven) was also a Wentworth Park winner last Saturday night in a smart 29.98 and with three successive victories to her name looks the one to beat.

Little Nangar (box seven) is making her Wentworth Park debut but has built a solid record at the provincial tracks and looks the best bet in the 5th grade Ray Kershler Stakes (520m, race two).
