Astrozone Among Young Classic Stars

By Stuart Turner

Unbeaten greyhound Astrozone and last week’s devastating winner Pepper Fire headline the five heats of the Group 3 Young Stars Classic (520m) at Cannington on Saturday night.

The in-form David Hobby-duo Teddy Monelli and Penny Monelli also look ones to watch in the heats of the $25,000-to-the-winner series.

Teddy Monelli jumps from box three in the first heat (race four) after scoring a 10th win from 14 starts last week over the 600m at Cannington.

The son of Mogambo and Jackie Bale is dropping back in distance but has a best of 30.02 over the 520m and looks tough to beat.

Pepper Fire (box eight) was a brilliant 29.75 winner at Cannington last week and looks the standout chance in heat two (race five).

The recent Group 3 SA Oaks winner has built the record of eight wins and 17 minor placings from 31 starts and also scored consecutive placings prior to last week’s win.

Jilly Keeping has the tricky box four but looks the top pick win in heat three (race six).

The Terry Erenshaw-trained greyhound has mixed form recently but was a 30.12 winner at Cannington two starts back and should have too much quality for these.

The David Hobby kennel is on fire at the moment and he could be celebrating another win in heat four with the talented Penny Monelli (box eight).

Last week’s 30.22 victory on a wet Cannington track extended Penny Monelli’s record to  12 wins and three minor placings from 20 starts.

Penny Monelli scored a sizzling 29.93 win over the 520m at Cannington in September and clocked 29.96 while winning from this box earlier this year.

Astrozone (box six) looks the latest star for gun Western Australia trainer Paul Stuart and appears to be the best bet in the fifth heat (race eight).

The exciting newcomer made it three wins from his first three starts with a smart 29.93 run over the 520m at Cannington on October 5.

Astrozone has not been seen competitively since then but should be nice and fresh and on previous form looks the best in this.

The five heat winners and three fastest runners-up progress to next Saturday’s final of the series, which is open to greyhounds whelped on or after May 1, 2014.
