Former Footy Star Buman Looks The Part

By Jeff Collerson

Former international rugby league star Allan Buman landed a winning double as an owner-trainer-breeder when Deja Vu and Far A Part scored at Unibet Gardens on Friday.

The duo are litter sisters to Shirae, also trained by Buman, and who has had two wins and a third from three starts.

Buman and wife Barbara bred the exciting litter from Skyla Jade, who was unraced but is an impeccably bred daughter of Knocka Norris and their former champion sprinter Rose Anjane, who won a remarkable 19 of 37 starts.

Rose Anjane was a daughter of the Bumans' Stresa, whose also produced the Group 1 National Futurity winner Daydream, herself a great producer.

Allan Buman, now 76, was a dashing hooker who represented NSW and Country firsts from 1965 to 1968 and who also played for Australia during the team's 1965 tour of NEW ZEALAND.

"Barbara and I only race our own breed and have not had anything to take to the track for the past few years,'' Buman said.

"Deja Vu is speedy but the jury is still out on whether she will run 520 metres because she only won a 400m race at The Gardens. But Far A Part, who won in 29.74 over The Gardens 515m trip on Friday, and Shirae, who has won twice over that course, the latest in 29.77, are highly promising.

"We are pretty sure we will be back at Wentworth Park with them shortly.''

Go Lassie Go came from box eight to clock fastest sectional times in Friday's semi-finals of the Pop Northfield Memorial Maiden at Casino and trainer Darren Russell would be happy with the same draw in this week's final.

"Give me box eight for Go Lassie Go any day,'' Russell said.

"At the same time she has such terrific early speed boxes don't matter too much to her.

"Go Lassie Go recorded the fastest splits of the four semi-finals and has always possessed great zip out of the boxes.''

Russell won last year's Pop Northfield Memorial with the Margaret Dwyer-owned Tripum, who has since taken out the Ipswich Derby and Albion Park Young Guns finals.

Go Lassie Go, also owned by Dwyer, is by El Grand Senor from the owner's bitch Surin Sal, while Tripum was the result of a mating of Surin Sal with Collision.

The fastest qualifier for this Friday's Pop Northfield final is the Evelyn Harris-trained Cosmic Bonus, who covered the Casino 411m in 23.41, .01 quicker than Go Lassie Go.

Cosmic Bonus had previously recorded a sizzling 23.21sec in a 411m performance trial at Casino so Harris believes the dog can improve on his Pop Northfield semi-final figures.

"He had a slight injury before the Pop Northfield series began so I think he can go a bit quicker,'' Harris said. "Cosmic Bonus is a younger half brother to Black Lee Bonus, who I have nominated for tomorrow night's Lismore Cup heats.

"Both are out of Dark And Stormy, who has since whelped a litter of seven greyhounds - six male and one female - to the great Fernando Bale.

Adam McIntosh has only one greyhound, Cincinnati Juice, in his kennels at Strathpine, Queensland, but that was sufficient to give him a winner with his first ever Wentworth Park starter on Saturday night.

Cincinatti Juice took out a heat of the 66th running of the Group 1 Ladbrokes Vic Peters Classic on Saturday night.

McIntosh, a plasterer who trains Cincinnati Juice "for a bit of fun'' had gone to the trouble of driving down to Sydney to trial his greyhound a couple of weeks back.

That dedication paid off with Cincinnati Juice improving sharply on her trial time and leading throughout in the Classic series' opening heat in 30.23.
