Clock's Ticking Right On Time For Magri

By Jeff Collerson

The two Jasons, Magri and Mackay">Mac">MacKAY, dominated Saturday's opening night of the Group 1 Ladbrokes Vic Peters Classic series by winning four of the 10 heats.

Magri got the ball rolling with Clock's Ticking winning heat two in 30.06 before leading Wicked Warrior (pictured) out for a sizzling 29.80 victory in heat four.

Mackay">Mac">MacKAY's Ando's Mac set the time standard for the night with a blistering all-the-way 29.72sec win in heat seven while his juvenile Mister Twister led from the catching pen for a nine lengths' win in heat nine in 29.97.

A January, 2015 whelping, Mister Twister was among the babies of the Classic nominations but performed like a veteran to take his record to four wins from four starts.

"That was the first time Mister Twister had been out of the boxes at Wenty, all he had previously here was a post-to-post hand-slip,'' Mackay">Mac">MacKAY said later.

"And while he handled box eight capably I would prefer to see him drawn on the rails in next week's semi-finals.

"Ando's Mac is doing every thing right and because he is a reliable beginner he is going to be hard to hold out in this series.''

Magri believes Wicked Warrior can get down to 29.60 at Wentworth Park.

"I am rapt in my pair's performances but Wicked Warrior is a bit quicker than Clock's Ticking,'' Magri said.
"I trialled Wicked Warrior over 366m up the straight at Appin on Tuesday and he clocked time that is seldom equalled there.  Before that he had also trialled 29.77 at Wentworth Park.''

Reviewer took 30.05 to win heat six but trainer Garry Williams says his greyhound's near perfect box manners give him a chance in any race he contests.

"Before tonight's win Reviewer trialled 29.86 at Dapto and his forte is his ability to begin quickly.

"His run home time tonight was only 12.09 and he can't seem to break 12sec but hopefully, as he matures, he will become stronger," Williams said.  "Just the same, Reviewer's speed from the starting boxes is a big asset.''

A stint tackling middle distances has rejuvenated the career of Runway Bono, who posted the night's third fastest time of 29.81 in heat five of the Classic.

Runway Bono trailed pacemaker Better Call Sloy to the home turn before finishing powerfully to win by two lengths.

At his previous start Runway Bono had won over 600m at Dapto in near record time of 34.32.

Sid Swain, at Wentworth Park assisting his son DEAN, Runway Bono's trainer, said the greyhound was back in peak confidence.

"DEAN does not have a faster dog in his kennels than this greyhound,' Swain senior said.  "Runway Bono had lost confidence in sprints so DEAN put him over 720m at Wenty and while he failed to run that distance, he then came back and performed well in middle distance 600m events.

"Now that his confidence has been restored Runway Bono is capable of winning anything.''

See you next week!
