Stars Are Out For Vic Peters Classic Heats

By Stuart Turner

Ritza Lenny, Benteke and Wicked Warrior are among the headline acts for this Saturday’s mouthwatering Group 1 Vic Peters Classic (520m) heats  at Wentworth Park.

Unbeaten Mister Twister and exciting kennelmate Ando’s Mac are also among the eye-catching contenders in the 10 heats of the $75,000-to-the-winner series, which is one of the biggest of the year in NSW and open to greyhounds whelped on or after April 1, 2014.

This year’s Group 2 Bob Payne Spring Sprint winner Ritza Lenny (box seven) and last week’s Group 1 Adelaide Cup finalist  Benteke (box five) go head-to-head in the eighth heat with each looking strong chances for the Classic.

Ritza Lenny, who was also a placegetter in the Group 1 Peter Mosman Classic, has a dazzling best of 29.60 at Wentworth Park and has scored 14 wins and seven minor placings from 30 starts.

Former NSW star Benteke, now in the kennel of gun Victorian mentor Brett Bravo, scored a similarly impressive  29.67 win at the Sydney circuit  in August.

This year’s Group 3 Magic Maiden winner Wicked Warrior (box four, pictured) has scored five of his seven career victories at Wentworth Park and looks the best in heat four.

He finished sixth on his return after almost two months’ out at Bulli on October 1 but if in full fitness looks a decent chance for the series.

The Jason Mackay-trained pair Ando’s Mac (box three, heat seven) and Mister Twister (box eight, heat nine) also look ones to watch on Saturday night.

Ando’s Mac has won five of his last six starts and clocked a sizzling 29.66 at Wentworth Park on October 1, while Mister Twister has won all three of his starts so far and ran a dazzling 29.58 at the Gardens on his last start.

Gun Victorian trainer Jason Thompson is bringing three of his exciting young greyhounds up for the series, with his best chance looking Reckoning (box five, heat eight).

The son of Swift Fancy and Ronray Disco has been running well in Victoria, clocking a terrific 29.64 at Sandown Park on his debut in August.

Others to watch in the series include Clock’s Ticking (box five, heat two), Got A Motor (box eight, heat three) and Elantris (box four, heat 10).

The semi-finals of the Vic Peters Classic take place on Saturday, October 22, with the final a week later.
