Penny Monelli Ready To Cash In At Cannington

By Stuart Turner

David Hobby rates Penny Monelli as the best of his four chances in Saturday night's WA Bred Championship (race five, 520m) at Cannington.

The Nambeelup trainer rugs up Penny Monelli (box one), Bob Monelli (box two), Monaro Monelli (box three) and Teddy Monelli (box four) in the $15,000-to-the-winner final.

Penny Monelli and Teddy Monelli are in super form, having won three of their last four starts, while Monaro Monelli  won his heat last week and has a sizzling best of 29.87 at the track.

There looks little between the quartet but Hobby believes the draw makes Penny Monelli the one to back.

"My best two chances are Penny and Monaro," he said.

"Ability-wise Teddy Monelli is probably the best of the quartet, followed Monaro, Penny and Bob, but I think Penny's probably the one to be on.

"I thinK Penny is likely to lead  with her early speed. Once she gets in front the rest have a job to catch her.

"They are all handy but Penny probably just edges it."

Penny Monelli ran a smart 29.93 while winning her heat last week and has won once and placed once in her two previous starts wearing the red rug.

Aside from Monelli’s hopefuls, the ever-dangerous Fun Boss (box six) looks the best of the rest in this race.

One of the most consistent WA greyhounds of the last two years, Fun Boss has scored 28 wins and 21 placings from 64 starts.

He has a terrific record of four wins and four minor placings from nine previous starts from this draw and ran 30.17 last start at Cannington.

Hobby can also score another win with his greyhound Senator Monelli (box one) looking capable of saluting in a high-quality Prime Trophies Stakes (race seven, 600m).

Senator Monelli has a terrific record from the inside draw, scoring five wins three minor placings from eight starts wearing the red rug, and with three wins and three minor placings from his last eight starts in in strong form.

“Box one is not a good draw over the 600 metres (at Cannington),” Hobby said. “You have to take a run into the inside and then come back out a bit.

“Box three and outwards is better, so one isn’t much of an advantage.

“Having said that, Senator Monelli is probably the best greyhound in this race. If he’s on his best form he can win.”

Gold Reserve (box one) is the latest hot newcomer from the gun Paul Stuart kennel and can triumph again in the Get the TABtouch Stakes (race eight, 520m).

The well bred son of Brett Lee and Starlight Delly has won six of nine starts so far and scored a smart 29.99 victory from this draw at Cannington in July.

West On Babe and Milly Keeping are quality performers and can take advantage of the rails draw to win races three and six respectively.
