Ring The Bell Headlines Sydney Cup Heats

By Stuart Turner

Champion Victorian stayer Ring The Bell and NSW star Cardiology go head-to-head in the Group 3 Ladbrokes Sydney Cup (720m) heats at Wentworth Park this Saturday.

The pair headline the first of two heats of $25,000-to-the-winner series, which feature some of the country's best current stayers.

Ring The Bell (box five, pictured with green rug) will make his Wentworth Park debut after enjoying a superb year for trainer Gerry O'Keeffe, which has included winning the Group 1 National Distance and Superstayers Invitational titles.

He finished third in last Saturday night's Group 3 Top Cat Stayers Cup, which extended his overall record to 16 wins and 16 minor placings from 47 starts and more than $200,000 prize money.

Ring The Bell will likely face tough competition from Cardiology (box three), who has enjoyed a stellar year for trainer Kayla-Jane COLEMAN.

This year's NSW Distance Championship winner has built the solid record of 15 wins and nine minor placings from 34 starts and has an impressive best of 42.11 over this trip.

Star NSW duo Whittaker (box two) and More In Store (box seven) look the two likely challengers in the second heat.

The top four from each heat progress to next Saturday's final at the Sydney track.

Saturday's Wentworth Park fields also features the return to racing of last week's Group 1 Dapto Megastar winner Let It Develop, who jumps from box five in a  high-quality Free-For-All Warren Mundine Appreciation Stakes (race three, 520m).

The JODIE Lord-trained greyhound took his prize money earnings past the $200,000 mark with his thrilling victory in the Megastar.

He will face a strong field including Good Odds Angel (box one), Magic Spring (box six), last Saturday night's Wentworth Park winner Maja Maja Mahi (box seven) and Tilly's Boy in box eight.

Saturday's racing also features the notable likes of Nangar Thunder (box four, race one),  Bessy Boo (box one, race seven) and Clock's Ticking (box eight, race eight).
