Nangar Bear On The Prowl For Barnes

By Jeff Collerson

Nangar Bear gave Brad Hill Billy's Dubbo 516m track record of 29.30 a shake and equalled Tricky Jade's long standing old time standard of 29.59 when he scored his fourth win in seven starts last Thursday.

A member of trainer Dennis Barnes' outstanding Primo Uno-Fancy Liza litter, Nangar Bear's tally is four wins and two seconds from seven starts.

Despite his dog's blistering time at Dubbo, Barnes is not getting carried away.

"It's too early to become excited, but Nangar Bear is doing every thing asked of him," Barnes said.  "If he keeps going along the way he is he should become a good greyhound.

"He will go through his grades at country and provincial tracks before I bring him to Wentworth Park.''

If Megastar winner Let It Develop's owner Peter Spiteri and trainer Jodie Lord were the most excited people trackside at Dapto on Thursday there's no doubt owner-trainer Ron Marsden was the most stunned.

While Let It Develop ran down Victorian flyer Pantera Nera to snare the $75,000 first prize in the Megastar, covering the 520m in 30.02, Marsden's fifth grader Hardaway Alteva won a later race in a blistering 29.83.

Hardaway Alteva had gone into her race with just one win from 13 starts but defeated a quality field with her smart run.

"I'm in total shock," Marsden said after the race.

"Before she began racing she was only trialling 30.50 and 30.60 at Dapto but then she won her maiden there in 30.27 which was promising.

"I brought her back to my kennels six weeks ago and thought she had no future after a dismal recent unplaced effort at Richmond.

"Then she trialled an improved 26.64sec at Bulli before trialling 22.50 at Maitland, which was faster than my good greyhound Hardaway Highway clocked at the same meeting.

"Hardaway Highway then won at Goulburn in 19.98sec and after the last race Hardaway Alteva trialled and clocked identical figures.

"I'm not getting too excited just yet though because at Dapto on Thursday every thing went her way.

"Hardaway Alteva had box eight and the greyhound in box seven veered to the left when the boxes opened, giving my greyhound a clear run down the outside.''

Ochre Keroma, arguably the most improved greyhound on the TAB provincial circuit, will chase her fifth successive win for new trainer Wayne Boreland at Richmond this Friday night.

Owner Matt Flynn, who purchased Ochre Keroma from her breeders, Ray and Sue Pitstock, could have a future middle distance star on his hands.

"We have had Ochre Keroma for her past six starts and she has really put it together, winning twice in handy times over 535m at Richmond before winning in a double over 565m at Maitland, the most recent win being last Thursday,'' Boreland's son John said.

"There is a race scheduled over 535m at Richmond next Friday for greyhounds with two to four wins so that looks ideal for Ochre Keroma.

"After that we will head to Wentworth Park with her but we think she will become a nice 600m greyhound and hopefully, with maturity, she will develop into a good stayer.''

Luddenham trainer John Callaughan made one of his rare visits to Victoria to win at Shepparton on Saturday night with Elantris.

Raced by his breeder Sonia Davis, Elantris staged an amazing performance to win his 450m race, after bungling the start and then being checked at the first turn.

The son of Swift Fancy and Socozie stormed down the outside to win running away in what the local race caller described as an amazing win.

"John reckons Elantris is the fastest dog he has trained,'' Davis said later.

"Elantris' bloodlines are an Irish-American cross and I have always believed that mix can work well.''
