Ngurah's Success No Mystery

By Jeff Collerson

Subawa Ngurah and his wife Jennifer landed a winning double at Goulburn on Friday with the offspring of an old giveaway brood greyhound.

Fubre, trained Subawa, and Jennifer's dog Galileo Mystery, who each won over 440m, are by El Grand Senor from Gembaz, who is now 13 years old.

Fubre took his record to 14 starts for five wins, four seconds and a third while Galileo Mystery's tally now stands at nine races for four wins and a second.

"Fubre has always been a bit quicker but Galileo Mystery went faster on Friday, running the best time of the day,'' Subawa said.

"We got Gembaz as a giveaway and the five members of this litter, which she whelped in September 2014, have already won 20 races.

"Old Gembaz obviously can't have any more pups but she lives a life of luxury, sleeping in our lounge room.''

And don't tell the Ngurah family people don't care about their greyhounds.

"We spend $300 a month on medication to keep Gembaz fit and well,'' Subawa said.

When Romeo Reign sped over the Bathurst 450 metre trip in 25.84 in a performance trial in January a bright future was predicted for the Michael Cope-trained youngster.

But the exciting Lidsdale-based greyhound did not break through for a win until last Friday at Richmond, when he posted fastest time in the weekly Maiden Series.

Romeo Reign led throughout from box one, covering the 535m in 30.93, which set the standard in the heats and almost certainly assures him of favouritism in this Friday's final.

"Considering he went so fast in his performance trial at Bathurst it is frustrating to think that it took seven months for him to win a race, but he was only having third start," Cope said.

"He had finished a good second on debut in a maiden heat at Wentworth Park in March but after finishing unplaced in the final Romeo Reign came down with a bad virus.

"No sooner had he recovered and returned to training than he contracted another virus.

"Just prior to last Friday he trialled a slick 25.70 over 450m at Bathurst and then went well in a couple of post-to-post hand-slips at Richmond.

"But he had not been over the 535m trip out of the boxes until Friday's heat.''

Hardaway Highway won eight short course races in succession between January and April and looks set to begin another winning streak after his impressive win at Goulburn on Friday.

The Ron Marsden-trained greyhound took his record to an imposing 11 wins, 10seconds and two thirds from 28 starts when he won over 350m in a fast 19.88.

On Friday Hardaway Highway was having only his second run after a spell but Marsden said there has been nothing amiss with the greyhound.

"My wife and I went to DARWIN on holiday for a few weeks so the dogs had a rest,'' he said.

"Then when we got back, I had to have two operations on my eye.

"Medical advice was I had to remain indoors for a while but I started exercising the dogs and soon decided Hardway Highway was fit enough to start racing again.

"The dog and I had to be driven to Goulburn on Friday but the result was terrific.''
