Melan One To Watch At Unibet Gardens

By Stuart Turner

Some of NSW’s most promising pups go head-to-head in the $10,000-to-the-winner Awesome Project Super Maiden Final (race eight, 515m) at Unibet Gardens on Friday.

There were some excellent performances in last week’s heats, including Melan (box seven) claiming Time honours with a smart 29.92 run.

Yet another handy newcomer from the strong western Sydney kennel of Kristy Sultana, Melan finished fourth over the 400m on debut at Maitland in May before being freshened for this series.

Melan took full advantage of the inside draw last week, coming home by four-and-a-quarter lengths.

He could face tough opposition in the decider from local hopeful Frekey (box two), who recorded an almost as impressive 29.93 win in the heats.

The well-bred Lindsay Davis-trained speedster is a daughter of Djays Octane and Key Exit, mother of multiple Group winner Keybow.

Frekey saluted by two-and-a-half lengths last week jumping from box six and will likely relish a move closer to the rails.

Another big threat looms in the shape of Mister Twister (box five), who qualified with a 30.03 effort last week.

The latest hot prospect from the gun Hunter Valley kennel of Jason Mackay, Mister Twister is  an outstandingly bred pup out of 2013 joint NSW Greyhound of the Year Double Twist, a Dapto track record holder and winner of 26 of her 46 starts, and notable sire Collision.

Ela Dodger (box one), Two Blue (box three), Three Ex El (box four), Roger’s In Town (box six) and Megadrive in box eight complete the field.

The race is part of a high-quality day’s racing at Unibet Gardens which will also see track record-holder and exciting middle distance prospect Mr. Shire aim for a fourth consecutive victory jumping from box eight in the Support NSW Greyhound Stakes (race six, 600m).

The Bob McColm-trained greyhound, who extended his record to eight wins and seven minor placings from 16 starts with a last start victory over the 565m at Maitland, ran a track best 34.28 on his last appearance at the Newcastle track in May.

Another exciting talent, Pippy Dippy (box four), also aims for a fourth consecutive victory in the Unibet Gardens 1-3 Wins Final (race seven, 515m).

The Martin Bowe-trained greyhound ran a scorching 29.72 triumphing at the Gardens last week and has won three of her four visits here.

Time Is Precious (box three) returned to top form with a 29.90 victory at the track last week and looks capable of triumphing with victory in the Save Our Greyhound Industry Stakes (race five, 515m).

Frekey’s litter sister Keysta (box three) scored a respectable placing behind Melan last week and looks the top pick in the day’s opening race, the Welcome To Newcastle Greys (515m).
