Trainer Suspended After Alleged Assault

By Greyhound Racing NSW

Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) has suspended licensed trainer and breeder Mr Keith Selten pending a Steward’s Inquiry following an incident at Bathurst Greyhound Racing Club.

On Monday, 25 July 2016, one of Mr Selten’s greyhounds ran into the running rail of the racetrack during a performance trial and was required to undergo an inspection by the on-track veterinarian. During the inspection it is alleged Mr Selten threatened that he may as well euthanise his dog if it was issued with a 30 day period of incapacitation. Pursuant to Rule 73 of the Greyhound Racing Rules, a veterinarian may issue a period of incapacitation to a greyhound that is injured during a performance trial, preventing the greyhound from racing during the period of incapacitation.

Following Mr Selten’s comment, he was reported to the GRNSW Steward in charge of the meeting and was required to explain his behaviour. During the interview with the on track Stewards it is alleged that Mr Selten physically assaulted a GRNSW Steward.

Following this alleged incident, Mr Selten’s licences were suspended and he was asked to show cause as to why his licences should not remain suspended pending the outcome of the Stewards Inquiry. The matter was also referred to the NSW Police.

On Tuesday 26 July, 2016 after considering submissions made by Mr Selten, GRNSW Stewards determined that Mr Selten’s licences should continue to be suspended pending the outcome an Inquiry into the incident.

“I recognise this is a very difficult time for industry participants; however, I cannot tolerate any abuse towards GRNSW staff while they undertake their important role to protect the welfare of greyhounds and run race meetings under the strict rules that must be followed by all participants,” interim GRNSW CEO Paul Newson said.

“All participants should be aware that GRNSW will immediately and decisively take action where the rules of greyhound racing are breached and will refer matters to law enforcement for potential criminal charges where the safety of our staff is threatened.

“It must also be remembered that this is also a difficult time for GRNSW staff as well and they also need the support of the industry during the next 12 months. They have been just as shocked as everyone else about the Government’s recent decision and are also trying to deal personally with the implications of the decision.”

GRNSW will provide further details in due course.
