Whittaker Primed For A Happy Return

By Jeff Collerson

Whittaker is better known as a stayer than a sprinter but his five Wentworth Park 520m wins top the success rate of any of his rivals in Wednesday night's Find Us On Facebook Stakes (race two, 520m).

The Julie Fletcher-trained greyhound (pictured) is resuming from a spell of nearly three months but is trialling well enough to win first-up.

"He clocked 30.04 in a 520m trial at Wentworth Park on July 12 but he needs a clear run on Wednesday,'' Fletcher said.

"In his trial his first split was slow, his second split was fair and his third split was fantastic. While he lacks pace I'm pleased to see him drawn close to the rails in box three.''

Martam Gold has been placed in just two of her five Wentworth Park races but trainer Michael Clayton believes Wednesday night's second heat of the Evans & Son Jewellers Bitches' Series could be "her race.''

"Martam Gold usually begins well but she does not have a lot of early speed," Clayton said.

"Box two though is a plus because she is better placed there than she was when she finished third after drawing box six at Wentworth Park last Wednesday.

"If Martam Gold brought her Nowra form to Wenty she would be hard to toss because she has twice broken the 30 second barrier in 520m races there.

"Given a clear run I think she can run 30.20 on Wednesday and those figures should be good enough to win a race like this.''

Trainer Jason Magri has bright prospects of landing a winning double with Clock's Ticking (box four, heat one of the Ladbrokes Odds Boost Sprint) and Wicked Warrior, who has box three in heat three of the same event.

Each of Magri's greyhounds boast excellent strike rates, with Clock's Ticking having recorded four wins, a second and a third from his past six starts and Wicked Warrior, undefeated in three Wentworth Park races, winning five of seven career appearances.

According to Magri Wicked Warrior has returned from a spell as a "better and more mature greyhound'' while Clock's Ticking was a great second behind Mister Cowora at his Wentworth Park debut last week.

Clock's Ticking dwelt at the start from box four but pushed between runners to be disputing the first turn lead with Mister Cowora.

But the winner, with the advantage of the inside running through exiting box one, was able to hold him out and drew away to score his sixth win in eight outings.

Clock's Ticking's opposition on Wednesday does not appear to contain any greyhounds with the incredible talent of Mister Cowora and he should break through for a city win.

Wednesday night's Free-For-All features an exciting three way clash between Fantastic Skye (box one), National Derby victor Magic Spring (box three) and the incomparable Bessy Boo, winner of 41 races, in box six.

The draw favours Fantastic Skye because Fever Pitch, drawn outside her in box two, tends to run two or three dogs' widths off the rails.
