McGrory Eyes A Way To Victory At Grafton

By Stuart Turner

The centrepiece of the Grafton Winter Carnival takes place this evening with five finals on offer.

Among the super night's racing at the Northern Rivers track is the $14,000-to-the-winner Taylor and Chase Valley Sheds Final (race seven, 407m), which features some potential stars of the future.

Sudoku Bullet (box four) will start likely favourite after impressing in the heats, but another eye-catching contender is the John McGrory owned and trained Tahlia's Way (box two).

With only Petite Point (box one), who claimed a sound 23.25 win in the heats, inside her, McGrory believes his greyhound can win the decider,

"The draw  should help (Tahlia’s Way) a lot, but she’s got to come out well,” McGrory said. “If she does that at a track like Grafton, she’s going to win.

"If she starts how she is capable of doing then I think they'll struggle to catch her.

“I go down the carnival when I think I’ve got a greyhound who might have a chance (to do well). Is she worth putting a dollar or two on? Yeah, I’d give her a fair chance.”

The daughter of Spring Gun and Miami Gold followed up an earlier 23.19 performance trial with a smart  22.99 win in last week's heats, cruising home by seven-and-three-quarter lengths.

After two earlier sound performance trials, Sudoku Bullet clocked a flying 22.91 victory in last week's heats from box four and has earned his likely favouritism tag.

Biwott (box five) was a 23.29 winner in last week's but earlier clocked a flying 22.88 performance trial at Grafton and looks a threat, while Nangar Bear (box three) looks the latest hot pup for NSW Central West trainer Dennis Barnes and is a decent each-way contender.

"It looks like Sudoku Bullet and Biwott are the biggest threats but certainly (Tahlia's Way) has ability," McGrory, who is based at Leeville in the Northern Rivers, said.

"I think it's going to come down to luck, but certainly mine is a chance."

In other Grafton Wednesday action, Northern Rivers star Norm The Storm (box five) looks the best bet in the $6000-to-the-winner Westlawn Finance Stayers Cup (race five, 610m).

This is his first competitive look at the 610m at Grafton but he has a fine record over the 600m at Brisbane’s Albion Park and has won once and placed once in two previous starts from box five.

Another Northern Rivers-based greyhound, Kyogle Clodhoppa (box six), looks the standout in the Village Green Sprinters Cup Final (race six, 407m).

Kyogle Clodhoppa has won three of his last four starts – all at Grafton – and was a commanding five-length winner at this track last week.

Spiders Brother (box five) looks the night's best bet in the 3/4th grade Carters Canine Capers Stakes (race 10, 407m).

A winner of 24 of his 52 starts so far, the Neil Staines-trained greyhound has won four of his last seven starts and scored a sound placing at Grafton last week.

Usually a fast starter, he has won five of his eight starts wearing the yellow rug and looks the best of these.

Twelve races are on the card and action starts at 7.04pm.
