Monaro Monelli Goes For Fabulous Five

By Stuart Turner

In-form greyhound Monaro Monelli is the one to beat in the Greyhounds WA Winter Cup (race seven, 520m) at Cannington on Saturday night.

Monaro Monelli jumps from box four in the high-calibre $15,000-to-the-winner decider aiming for a fifth win in a row.

One of the best performing greyhounds in Western Austalia this year, Monaro Monelli qualified fastest in last week’s cup heats, taking out his race in 29.95.

That win extended the David Hobby-trained greyhound’s good record since Cannington’s re-opening to seven wins and five placings in 13 starts at the track.

While he has drawn awkwardly, Monaro Monelli does have a good record from box four with one win and one placing from two starts wearing the blue rug.

The closest challenger to Monaro Monelli looks like Who’s Got Snoop (box one), who has won from the rails draw on his last two starts and won his heat in an impressive 30.03 last week.

Fun Boss (box five) has been close to his brilliant best in recent weeks and qualified for Saturday’s Winter Cup with a close second place finish in his heat.

In other action at Cannington on Saturday night, 2015 Group 2 Dapto Puppy Classic winner and recent Group 2 Queensland Derby winner France Soir looks the standout pick in race three (520m).

Now in the gun Paul Stuart kennel, France Soir (box one) is having a first start in five weeks after finishing fourth in quality company at his Western Australian debut.

He has built a decent career record of five wins and six career placings from 15 starts so far and if fully fit should be too good from this draw.

Former Victorian star Weblec Belle has been racing well since heading west and looks ready to salute in race four (520m).

The 2014 Group 3 Brian Johnstone Memorial winner (box three) has won twice and placed six times in 11 starts for mentor Chris Halse.

She looks the best in race with several others mixing recent form.

Quartz Bale (box seven) will look to recover his previously devastating form in race five (520m).

The 2015 Australian Cup runner-up did place three times at Cannington last month and has won three of five previous starts from this box.

Explosive Gunn and Cosmic Malteze were impressive winners at Cannington last week and can repeat those feats in races 11 and 12 (both 380m) respectively.

The Jayson Gunning-trained Explosive Gunn (box eight) clocked an impressive 22.00 while scoring a third win in six starts over this trip at Cannington seven days ago and looks hard to stop.

Cosmic Malteze (box seven) has won three of his last four starts, including a victory from this same draw at Cannington last week.

He has done most of his racing over  longer distances so should be too strong for the rest over the 380m.
