Bessy Boo Aiming For 30th Wentworth Park Win

By Jeff Collerson

Only bad luck can prevent  Bessy Boo from notching his 30th Wentworth Park win in Wednesday night's gapnsw.com.au Masters Stakes (race six, 520m).

Bessy Boo (pictured) has box four and while he is far from ideally drawn trainer Christine Proctor would be happy to see her wonder greyhound drawn closer to the fence than he was last Saturday night.

In that race, Bessy Boo was hampered trying to cross to the rails from box eight and put up a gallant performance to finish third to One Hill and Vintage Rox.

A win in Wednesday night's easier event will lift Bessy Boo's earnings to just on $313,000 and extend his career record to 40 wins and 47 placings from 131 starts. He will also take his Wentworth Park tally to 27 wins over the 520m distance and three over the 720m long distance trip.

It is hard to look past Bessy Boo as Wednesday's best bet, while front running Rapid Trigga appeals as the meeting's best value wager in the Ladbrokes Odds Boost stakes (race 11, 520m).

While Rapid Trigga has set up big early leads and been caught on the line to finish second at his past two Wentworth Park outings, he is drawn to lead throughout from box two on Wednesday night.

“Although he has not yet won at Wenty I'm encouraged by the fact that he has improved his time in each of his three races at the track,” Rapid Trigga’s trainer John Smart said.

“At his first start he finished third in 30.45, then he went under by a length in 30.37, and last week he was beaten a half length in 30.27. He pulled up well after his last race and I gave him a hand-slip up the straight at Appin on Saturday which has topped him up nicely for Wednesday.”

On times Katie The Weapon has at least five lengths on her rivals in Wednesday's AAA Radiator Specialists Final (race seven, 720m), but trainer Neville Brown believes Merry Cam will be hard to toss.

“Katie The Weapon has box five so she will need to begin smartly from there,” Brown said.

“And while Merry Cam was a distant second to Katie The Weapon in last week's heat I thought her run was very good as she came from a long way back in the early stages, and she has box two in the final.

“Since the heats Katie The Weapon has not been trialled but has had plenty of work on the walking machine so is fit enough.”

No trainer has landed more Wentworth Park winners in 2016 than Dean Swain and the Vineyard-based trainer is tipped to enhance his current tally of 20 wins by scoring on Wednesday with You Got Rivered (box one, race eight) and Joybell Magic (box four, race five).

You Got Rivered has found trouble from bad boxes at his past two Wentworth Park starts but is trialling really well and is my best winning chance on Wednesday,” Swain said.

“He takes 40 or 50 metres to hit top gear but box one is a big advantage and if he can find the lead I expect him to run 30 seconds flat.

Joybell Magic has had nearly three weeks off since contesting a couple of 600m races so is nice and fresh and I'm hoping she can sprint well first up.

“In the past I've found that giving greyhounds a couple of middle distance races boosts their confidence and when they are freshened up and brought back to sprints they race well.”

Swain also has talented unraced youngster Nadal">Nadal in box seven in heat one of thedogs.com.au Maiden Series (race one, 520m).

“He is a smart dog and has had a few looks at Wentworth Park but he has drawn what appears to be the strongest of the four heats,” Swain said.

Nadal is up against promising youngsters Starzsa Light, Winsome Roxy and Reviewer while Winsome April and Watching Magic (heat two), Winsome Spring and Exciting (heat three) and He's Clever, Gangster Miss and Starzsa Smiling (heat four) should ensure next week's final is a crackerjack.
