Deputy Chief Looking To Rule Cannington

By Stuart Turner

A more suitable draw has trainer Max Julien confident his greyhound Deputy Chief can register a win at Saturday’s Cannington meeting.

Julien’s greyhound, who will pass $80,000 prize money earnings with a win, jumps from box two in the fourth heat of the Winter Cup (race six, 520m).

Deputy Chief has mixed his form recently but did win two starts back in a smart 30.26 over the same track and distance.

He has one win and five minor placings from 10 previous starts wearing the checks and can lead a field that lacks genuine hot pace.

“He (has) been getting tough box draws which makes it hard when he’s racing in good company,” Julien said.

“He won from box two starts back where he showed what he can do. Ideally, he likes to be two or three off the fence, so this draw should help him.

“When he ran 30.19 (in April) he got a couple of bumps so I think he can go a little quicker if he gets a bit of luck. That could be enough to win this.”

In other Cannington action on Saturday night, Group 1 Perth Gold Cup winner Ima Wagtail will look to bounce back from a below-par run last week in the first Winter Cup heat (race three, 520m).

Coming off a 30.06 win at Cannington on June 4, Ima Wagtail could not overcome a poor start from box seven last Saturday night and only managed to finish seventh.

He will have the same draw on Saturday night so will need to begin well to get back to winning ways.

Fun Boss was back to his brilliant best with a storming 29.88 win last week and looks capable of saluting in the second heat (race four, 520m).

A winner of 26 of his 56 starts and one of WA’s best greyhounds of the last two years, Fun Boss won from this box at Cannington last month and in current form looks the best.

Monaro Monelli (box six) was a storming winner of last week’s Sandi’s Me Mum Memorial Final and looks the clear top pick in the third heat (race five, 520m).

The David Hobby-trained greyhound has won his last three starts, not been out of the placings since March and won once and placed once in his two previous starts from box six.

In other Cannington Saturday action, Topology and Explosive Gunn look the top picks to bookend the card in races one and 12 respectively.

Topology (box two) looks the latest quality greyhound from the gun Paul Stuart kennel and should have too much for this field.

He has won six times and placed eight times in 14 starts so far and ran a strong 30.32 behind Monaro Monelli last week.

Explosive Gunn (box three) has won two of his five starts so far – all over the 405m at Mandurah – but should be stronger over the 380m in this race.
