Maya Herrera Ready For Debut Dominance

By Jeff Collerson

Maya Herrera, who has won her past three starts at the provincials, has trialled smartly at Wentworth Park in preparation for her race debut there in tonight's fourth event, a 520m fifth grade.

The daughter of Where's Pedro and Tifia scored her latest victory at Dapto on May 26, pipping promising newcomer Megsie Marble by three-quarters-of-a-length in a smart 29.81.

The Garry Edwards-trained greyhound, who has posted fastest time of the meeting in two of her past three wins at Nowra and Dapto, was hand-slipped post-to-post at Wentworth Park and pleased her trainer.

"She clocked 24.37 and I was happy with that time,'' Edwards said.

"I'm disappointed Maya Herrera has box six but if she gets enough galloping room for the first two or three hops she should be okay because she has good early speed.

"And while I would prefer her drawn inside, I don't think she will crash too sharply towards the rails.

"Megsie Marble, who has box five, is our obvious danger. Maya Herrera can't seem to get away from her.

"Megsie Marble defeated Maya Herrera in the Nowra Puppy Classic final on April 16 but my greyhound turned the tables when they met at Dapto on May 26.''

Edwards could land a winning double with Twist Me Over likely to start favourite in race seven, a 520m fourth and fifth grade.

"I'm pleased to see her in box three,'' Edwards said. "For some reason Twist Me Over now has a tendency to step to the right when the boxes open, so she is probably better off in three than she would have been in box one.

"When she won at Nowra in 29.95 at her most recent start on May 30, she recorded outstanding sectional times.

"Her first split was 4.28 and they seldom get anywhere near those figures. She broke the 17-second barrier for the second section, and that is also high flying.''

Petrify gets her chance to open her Wentworth Park account after being placed twice at the track when she exits box three in the third race, a 520m fifth grade.

Petrify chased winner Status Seeker to the home bend at her latest Wentworth Park outing, winding up third and beaten two-and-a-half lengths in 30.44.

"If she begins cleanly Petrify has a good chance of leading this field and if she gets on the lure I expect her to run a good race,'' trainer Tony Hokin said.

"At Wenty the last bit pulls her up because she can't find the line strongly, but on the bunny she should run 30.30 or 30.40 and that might be good enough to win this.''

Former New Zealander Cawbourne Kristy, who won the Richmond Riches Puppy Classic Consolation at her third start in Australia, is boxed to break through for her first Wentworth Park win in race two, a 520m fifth grade.

Cawbourne Kristy, who has box one on Wednesday night, bungled the start at her Wentworth Park debut last Wednesday night but showed good speed to be third from the first turn until the middle stages.

That effort took its toll in the straight but the Glen Quirk-trained greyhound held on gamely to beat all but the placegetters in the race won by Dandy Jack.

Tomorrow night's race is a much easier affair and Cawbourne Kristy looks poised to take her record to a consistent 11 wins and eight placings from 28 starts.

After last week's Wentworth Park race part-owner Stuart Dickinson said: "I was happy with that effort because the field was strong and Cawbourne Kristy had never seen Wenty before, even in a trial.

"That run should improve her considerably and she has phenomenal early speed.

"Her only flaw is that she is usually a slow beginner, so she always has to use up a lot of her energy getting to the front.''

Bessy Boo  (pictured) has again drawn 'the wrong side of the track' but he should have too much class and experience for his rivals in the 520m Ladbrokes Bet Better Free For All.

Bessy Boo has drawn box seven or eight at his past four starts but has managed two wins and a third so should be able to overcome box eight tomorrow night.

Although he is a keen railer, Bessy Boo has won eight races while wearing the pink rug and looks set to land his 27th Wentworth Park 520m race.
