Magic Spring Could Be Winter Cup Bound

By Jeff Collerson

Magic Spring could be a candidate for the heats of the Group 1 Brisbane Winter Cup at Albion Park after notching his 14th Wentworth Park win on Saturday night.

The National Derby winner grabbed the lead at the first turn and stole a big break on the field and although fading in the run home he held on to win by nearly two lengths in 30.42.

That time was well outside Magic Spring’s personal best figures at Wentworth Park of 29.86 but owner-trainer Noelene Holloway was satisfied with his performance.

“His speed from the starting boxes and his early zip is always a big factor for Magic Spring,” Holloway said.

“I plan to bring him back to Wentworth Park next week but will discuss with my father, George Singline, the possibility of taking Magic Spring to Albion Park for the Cup heats on June 30.”

Magic Spring's win gave Holloway a winning double with her Derby winner's litter brother One Samuel overcoming another slow start to win a 520m 5th grade race by a neck in 30.56.

One Samuel had to work hard for his win and although the time was steady they weren't running quick times tonight,” Holloway said.

Veteran trainer Brian Barrington, who has built greyhound tracks all over the world, also scored a double with litter brother and sister Emission Control and Status Seeker.

Both greyhounds led all the way in their 5th grade races, with Emission Control's figures of 30.07 only 0.01 outside Vintage Charm's fastest time of the night.

Although Emission Control led throughout from box eight at Wentworth Park last month Barrington has previously told thedogs.com.au that his the greyhound is better suited drawn near the rails.

Emission Control certainly made full use of her two draw on Saturday.

Trainer Keith Pedrana predicted his dog Ricky Boy's future would be as a stayer after the greyhound came from a distant third at the halfway point to defeated tearaway leader Reventon by a head in a 5th grade on Saturday.

Ricky Boy, a litter brother to Dawn Mini, had won over 600m at Gosford four nights before Saturday's victory.

“He would not have blown out a candle after tonight's race, having just completed a 520m gallop, Ricky Boy was ready to go around again,” Pedrana said.

“I expect him to make a stayer but his brother Lee Secret, who has been sidelined through injury, is much quicker than either Ricky Boy or Dawn Mini.”

Mako Man, who has been in Kevin Keys' Dapto kennels for just over a month, took his record to two wins and a second in three starts for his new trainer with a powerful performance.

Keys took over training Mako Man for owner Tracey Bryant after her father Owen Makin retired from training greyhounds earlier this year.

Mako Man is going to make a lovely 600 metre dog,” Keys said after Mako Man had come from fifth at the first turn to win by nearly four lengths.

See you next week!
